@JordyChrist

I'm pretty sure they do that with every single Global Chat column. It's that whole 'retrospective on the week' thing.

Just a word of warning, if you deleted your old characters & then saw the Grandfathering as I did, be aware that SoE do nothing unless you are an active subscriber, even if you just purchased an expansion pack you will get no help whatsoever until you have a sub. I thought it was kinda lousy treatment, but their terms & conditions are something they rabidly adhere to.

Someone sounds as if they got ganked one too many times, and favors pretentious word structure. Wasting time camping a player, killing them numerous times, is a loss for the ganker. Their time could easily be better spent. Seeing a member of the opposing faction and killing them once, when world PvP is active, is perfectly fine and even encouraged.

@EventVox

It is a bit hyperbolic, isn't it? I'm not fond of open PvP (or much PvP at all), but I understand that being in such an environment is my choice, and that those participating do so out of a need for -competition-, not douchery.

Also, welcome to human nature, where most people aren't capable of caring about the feelings of strangers in more than a cursory fashion. That's not psychosis, and it's the opposite extreme that actually reveals self-worth issues. And I say that as a bleeding heart carebear who burdens himself with the feelings of strangers all the time. I know that's not healthy for myself, no matter how admirable it may seem on the surface.

All extremes have problems - those who don't have empathy and those who take on too much for themselves.

As much as I really agree on his take on griefers and them being a sorry lot.. (Far too many people in this world take delight in meanness and pushing others down in order to feel better about themselves, manipulation, passive-aggressiveness, sociopathy and sadism are all stuff we could stand to have a lot less of in society.)

...I can't help but think he's conflating open world PvP with it being filled with 100% griefer types that get a supreme kick out of making real people unhappy.

These types exist, no doubt about it. And the less restrictions on PvP, the more they thrive in these worlds. But there can be open world PvP that designs away the tendency for these types to lurk. The best places they love are where they can gank people who stand no chance against them through the game design, with no consequences to themselves. Surprisingly, these can be places like WoW.

Full loot, or heavy consequence to loser games can also attract them. If the design is skewed so they never lose, they will be there. Throw in a good chance of having the tables turned, and things become a lot more interesting.

A lot of PvP focused games have another contingent besides griefer types though. Which I think are the majority of PvPers. They're out for sport hunting. Kill or be killed, it's just a way of keeping score. If you show up in the game or zone, they presume you've consented to PvP and think the same way. One side goes splat, no hard feelings, maybe we'll meet in another clash some other time.

Me, I don't really get sport hunting thrills or kicks out of seeing my K:D ratio turn positive. But I do recognize that some people do, and they're normally happy populating PvP games, with a smaller percentage being the irritating griefers no one likes.
