and so it came to be that a unique sandboxy MMO was shut down to make way for yet another retarded WoW clone.... and the peasants rejoiced, for it was repetitive and mind numbing and more suited for their lesser minds...

now don't forget to vote me down ;) wouldn't want anyone to say something bad about the greatest MMO release of the year, now would we?

I feel if the game was as great as everyone says it was now that it's closing, then it would have been successful enough to keep running.

@Evilgm It was that great but me too didn't play it anymore for years. The reason was an outdated graphics engine and inadequate UI. But the gameplay and openness still remains unmatched. A similar MMO would be EQ2, with outdated graphics and UI. But they went F2P and it was the correct move. If SWG went F2P it could have been another success because you can forgive it's flawes/inadequacy when you don't pay a sub. But, well, there is SWTOR (which I will sub) with the same IP and LA not wanting it around anymore. So it's gone down because of LA not SOE or insufficient subs.

@eLdritchZ Consider yourself downvoted. Not because of your taste. Not because of your opinion. But because you come across as someone with a bit of an asshat attitude.

To all those who played SWG: you have my sympathies. Make the most of the few remaining days and screenshot and fraps the hell out of it.

@Evilgm I think part of the problem was that they tried to build a game that appealed to one audience when the game launched and a different audience when they released the NGE and the two audiences were so different that they one that would have found the NGE appealing had already been turned off by the game as it was at launch and the one that found the launch game appealing was extremely turned off by the NGE. It didn't help that the game didn't launch with space combat.

@Furdinand Yep game was much better pre NGE. People look back on this game like it was some amazing game. It was not.

As others have stated, SWG was in many ways ahead of its time. Unfortunately what really killed that game, and has since killed a few other MMO's with good potential, is a Dev team that has no idea how to develop and refine an MMO post launch. I will always miss the ability to create a real player made city, as well as the awesome crafting system. Farewell SWG, you were my first MMO love. o/

Unless some tool at LucasArts decided to cancel the license because he feared the almighty, greatest-mmo-of-all-time TOR might lose two or three subs because a few people opted to play SWG instead. LucasArts just never got over the fact that WoW did better than SWG and this is their attempt to restore balance in the force. All it did for me was ensure I would never, ever, play another LA game.

RIP SWG
Suck it, LucasArts

looking forward to SWTOR because of my guild. Would have rather seen that much money sunk into SWG though.

All games shut down at some point and this game stayed afloat for a long time. I don't understand folks rationale that because the game is shutting down that it was a total failure. It wasn't at all, but the game had a potential in it that it never really reached. I think that's what most folks remember, and despite the haters, the game had good elements that should be used in other games.

@Rubi:

I tried L2 right now. DL/installation was flawless but then... oh my, no WASD, click-to-move and sloppy responsiveness. By todays standards I'd say it's not enjoyable anymore. EQ2 or RoM would be a better choice, right now in the F2P spectrum. Obviously, who wants real fun is willing to pay some bucks.

Wow, everyone wishes they could play EQ2. Me too... In face, after I found out that they are grandfathering old existing characters so they can be accessed for free, I decided to redownload it and check it out!

...but I don't remember what my password was and when I try to reset it, I get a security question asking for my Zodiac sign, and both of my actual Greek and Chinese Zodiac signs don't work :(
