It's going to be easy to miss it next week amidst launch news, but Star Wars Galaxies
is shutting down. And so we say farewell to one of the greats of the genre, for whether or not the game was your cup of tea, it was unique. It was an ambitious project, aiming for all sorts of clever features and deserving no little credit for its many successes. We'll have more memorial pieces as the final shutdown approaches, but for now, let's just respect the sunset on a game that did a lot for the genre as a whole and provided so many players with so many memories.
Of course, first and foremost, this is an installment of WRUP, and that means we're talking about what we're playing over the weekend. We're also talking, rather appropriately, about games that we regret not having time to play. So see what the Massively staff is up to after the break, and let us know what you'll be doing in the comments.
: I'll be switching to Pocket Legends
and Star Legends
for my next Rise and Shiny
, especially since they now have browser versions and I want to try them out. Other than that, I'll be playing my usual: Illyriad
, and Glitch
; checking out new EverQuest II
stuff; and getting some DC Universe Online
time in! I love how my character looks!
I wish I had more time for Ryzom
, Lord of the Rings Online
(and EverQuest II
). And City of Heroes
; we used to play the heck out of that game. Oh, and did I mention Ultima Online
? Or how about Dark Age of Camelot
? Basically all of those titles are fantastic, and I'm always busy scouring the internet for new, tiny games that I miss time with some of the older "AAA" titles. They just don't make them like that anymore!
: I'm hosting guests for the next week, but I'm hoping to sneak into Star Wars Galaxies
to take some final screenies before the end.
I wish I'd played LEGO Universe
before it was too late. But right now I'm sitting on installs of Ryzom
and EverQuest II
that I will probably never get around to. EQII
in particular is one of those games I played a long time ago and abandoned because of the grind, but it's become so much more sandboxy over time that I wish I'd stuck with it in its prime so that I'd have another fallback sandpark when I get the craving.
Next week, I am going to be up to my eyeballs in Star Wars: The Old Republic
and the likely release of the latest patch for Final Fantasy XIV
. This weekend, though... well, I'm probably going to get some Christmas shopping done and take some time in City of Heroes
, since there's nothing major coming out for that game next week. It's a calm before a storm, really.
If there's one game I really wish I had the time for and don't, it's Star Trek Online
. I bought it right around launch, enjoyed it, and liked most of what I've seen coming out for the game subsequently... but I just don't have the time to play it on top of my other games. I also do wish that I'd had a chance to take part in The Matrix Online
before its closure, but one thing led to another and the stars never quite aligned.
Assassin's Creed: Revelations
and EverQuest II
for me, and I'll probably manage to squeeze in a couple of Tribes: Ascend
and Global Agenda
are my two regrets. There's only so much time in the day, and multiple full-featured MMOs really take a bite out of it.
: I'll be diving into Lineage II
for Choose My Adventure
. The game is surprisingly good-looking. It especially has some neat graphic effects. I'm also having loads of fun playing survivor in Fallen Earth
. That MMO is so much fun to do absolutely nothing in.
I wish I had more time to play MMOs, period. There are so many I'm starting to regularly enjoy.
: I'm on a lite MMO diet this weekend as I frantically prepare for the coming of Star Wars: The Old Republic
. Get them chores done early, I say! If time permits, perhaps a little EQII
and Lord of the Rings Online
with (dare I mention its holy name?) Chrono Trigger
, which just released on the iOS.
I always wish I had more time for the many, many MMOs out there. It's hard to play most MMOs casually. That said, I usually pick up whatever MMO that looks interesting to me that month, so I don't have many regrets in that regard.
: Now that Lineage II
is F2P, it's all downloaded and installed and I'm dying to find some time to play it. I need to finish crushing the Mongolian empire in Civilization V
as well; Genghis Khan is getting a little mouthy for my taste. Finally, I have an Underworld run planned with my guild this weekend. Three guesses what next week's Flameseeker Chronicles
will be about!
There are so many MMOs that I wish I had more time for. Fallen Earth
is at the top of my list -- I log in, I knock out a quest or two, then I'm out of time. That's a game I would play daily if I could.
I finally sucked it up and beat Fallout: New Vegas
. I was trying to finish all of the side quests first, but constant crashes forced me to just go back to the storyline quests and finish it off once and for all. Next up in my quest to finish old console games: Mass Effect 2
. After playing SWTOR
last week, I was reminded of just how much better BioWare
is at storytelling than Bethesda
. I'll also be playing some APB: Reloaded
here and there.
For the bonus question, there are so many games I wish I had time for, it's almost impossible to list them all. Topping that list, though, is probably EQII
. I hear the Massively team talk about the fun they're having, but I know it's not something I could really play properly with time investments, etc. But I created four characters in it, if that counts!
At the start of every weekend, we catch up with the Massively staff members and ask them, "What are you playing this week?" (Otherwise known as: WRUP!) Join us to see what we're up to in and out of game -- and catch us in the comments to let us know what you're playing, too!
