I think there will always be a handful of MMOs that are sub based.

@freebase

What's interesting is while the number of mmorpg's has gone up incredibly, the number of sub-based mmorpg's has remained relatively constant.

So yeah, if you're in the top 5 you can charge a sub. All others get your item shop on.

@jimr9999us

Yeah, SWToR was a lot of fun to play. I am really looking forward to the game.

I'd pay $20 bucks to see Casey v Gary in a cagematch.

Just in case you're ever looking for more revenue Massively.

Any new MMO with a subscription is either going to be a major blockbuster like SWTOR or a small cult/niche game. Anything new aspiring to just break into the mainstream needs some kind of B2P(like GW), F2P or freemium model.

"ohmigod SWTOR is almost here edition" Yep and because it's designed like all the other mmo's aside from the voice acting, six months down the road people will be bored of it, just like Rift. :) and Rift did two things right, fast expansion updates with new content each update, and random world battles.

GW2 will be the game changer, LITERALLY because they are addressing EVERY major problem every mmo developer has ever had to face and FIXED them hands down.

I agree. I'm surprised, because I expected better from the TOR community.

Agggh!

No "SWTOR Fridays" anymore?

Haven't seen an update on their homepage yet!

Yes, they are close enough, but sheesh! Least they could do is make up an article on what the Devs ate for lunch! ;P

I really want to like this show, but a lot of discussions they have are hyperbolic and end disastrously. I guess it's okay if you like that kinda thing.

Woah he ( sorry didn't catch his name ) really doesn't like FFXIV at all! That is some news about the game not scheduled for actual completion until 2013 or the end of 2012! I can't see paying to play something like that, a beta essentially, even at half price. I have had my eye on FFXIV as something I might like to explore. My plan was hopping on board when it launches on the PS3 thinking that would signal the game being truly finished. All the PC gamers are just beta testers. And no, I would never pay to play in any beta. I would much rather wait for the finished product. I beta tested one game years ago and really have no interest in doing it again. Beta testing is like the ultimate spoiler.

Oh they run on donations! Well, that will tell you who they are obliged to right? Without advertizing they are not slanted toward the companies or cautious about offending their sponsors. Dig it while it lasts, because if they are successful at all, eventually they will accept sponsorship. I like these guys tho. First I have seen them.
