2004 and City of Heroes was my first MMO. I'll never forget feeling really powerful after beating up a few groups of Hellions and then moving on to my first in a long, long, long line of sewer door missions, thinking "I rock at this game", only to come across the Vazhilok. And it was a mission with an end boss too. A dreaded eidolon. I died. A lot.

After I made my first hero science-based, I swore to never do that again. Vazhilok missions in the first few levels were sheer horror, for more reasons than just the subject matter.

@Lenn

Those where what I define as mobs that hit way harder then they really should. Troggs where a bit like that back in Vanilla WoW. :(

@Utakata A wake-up call. "Oh, so this game *isn't* a breeze after all?"

One of my first attempts at (the original) Positron TF, also back in '04. All of us bright-eyed newbies, most of us without travel powers or even DOs, some barely making the "you must be THIS tall to ride" bar.

First or maybe second room, we team-wipe to the vomit alpha from a massive Vahz spawn. Half the TF quits on the spot and the rest soon follow. (Toxic resist is still hard to find, and for darn sure none of us had any of it.)

@Lenn

Well it was a wake-up call to me back then...when learning a new game. Now it's more of a breeze since I've master more the art of crowd control and defenses...in short, if I don't want to die I don't let them hit me. Or least kill them before they do. (ie. Always go for the exploding one first.) But they still hit pretty hard for what they are none of the less. :)

Prior to Going Rogue I'd say the Vahzilok were the toughest enemy group in the 1-20 range. Stacked slaws are exceptionally nasty when you're a low level hero who only has 2 attack powers (and brawl) to begin with; the toxic damage can hit like a truck and I'm sure most of us have seen sewer runs that came to a sudden stop after a zombie exploded at exactly the wrong moment.

A good, characterful group though, and their Hannibal Lector-esque dialogue is always entertaining.

"Obviously, a Necromancy Mastermind makes a lot of sense, but the Eidolons have a variety of darkness-based powers that you could also imitate..."

I would disagree with this. Necromancy operates as if its a magic-based power-set even though you can choose any path of power when creating a character. Vahzilok are also clearly science-based monstrosities rather than traditional zombies. The artwork and animations are pretty different between the Vahzilok and the zombies of the Necromancy power-set.

Also the Vahzilok Eidolon actually use radiation emission for most of their powers. They have a dark hold (tentacles).

So if you want to play as a Vahzilok I'd say a dark/radiation corrupter would be best, although a controller or dominator would work too.

@Gryphmon Zombies or fake zombies, you still summon zombies. Half the time you have to overlook what your powers look like, or in the case of power pools and temp powers you have to overlook that you have them period or find some clever way to explain them.

@Gryphmon

I know this is late, but I found out you're kind of incorrect. It depends on the type of Eidolon. Murk and Mire Eidolons actually do exclusively have Darkness powers, it's just the Luminous Eidolons that have Radiation powers.

Between the Vahz and the CoT ghost at them lvls was a nightmare trying to fight! I quit that evening after slew of failed runs. but eventually figured out how to avoid getting pummeled every new toon I made to go up against them.

It should be noted that the comic also has a plot in witch a rag-tag trio of heroes revealed valz to be a villain and uncovered his artificial zombie making plot.
