My dad still plays WW2 online, but he doesn't play any other MMOs. From what I can gather, he likes that it's slower paced and more strategic than any of the others. Have you guys found that to be the case? Do you know any other ones I could recommend to him?

@epilepticemu

WW2 Online is still, 10 years later, the ONLY truly combined arms game on the market. It is also STILL the biggest MMO in map terms of ANY MMO ever made. And all on a single server.

Just a pity it never got the population it deserved. I'm a year one player and I still log in from time to time. Haven't played it 'full time' for about 3 years now. And it still rocks hard.

I started ATITD for the first time this tale. I am math/listing the game, next tale it will be much easier to make plans and gather the necessary amount of resources for every project. Some people think it will ruin the game to have all that info available but ah well, I enjoy doing it.

Much of what drives ATITD's underpinnings is math anyway. Great to have someone who likes that sort of thing join the community. Wait till you see the more complex stuff like cooking, wine, thistles. Serious dowsing for metal veins should be coming up pretty soon...

"If you're eager for any scrap of information about the game's eventual graphic update, new screenies have been posted to the forums that make this 10-year-old title look positively modern."

Sure, "modern" for 2005.

Anyone who expects any more from AO's "new" engine is going to be sadly disappointed.

I give Funcom 6 months from release of the "new" engine to the final shutdown announcement when the masses don't come flooding in.

Doubt it. Assuming the graphics update ever sees release at all (as opposed to being extended on through infinity), AO's development team is as minuscule as their development costs. Games like AO are extraordinarily difficult to kill as long as they're kept on life support by their regulars.

If they can get Anarchy Online looking good enough that it doesn't make my eyes bleed to look upon it, I'd be happy to visit the world of Rubi-Ka again.

Seriously, the only thing that keeps me from playing now is that the graphics fall too far below my "eyeball acceptable" standard -- and I'm not a "graphics uber alles" gamer by any stretch.

I wonder .. has any other MMORPG ever tried to significantly update its graphics engine, post launch?

I wish the AO crew the best!

RuneScape has updated its graphics engine at least twice. Once from 2d to 3d, and once from bottom right of the following image to top left: http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20111122164206/runescape/images/7/78/Hd-ld_comp.png

@AltarofScience

Might have bumped into the wrong mini-community then or made a bad first impression. People will be people, all sorts in and out of game. I nearly got turned off from the game when I first started and got jumped on and tongue lashed by a grumpy clique-y vet. Went elsewhere, met other much nicer people and stayed on.

I fail to see how all the handy calculators, macros, tools, etc. can be developed without people with a copious grasp of math and computer programming and yes, spreadsheets.

I'm barely passable with the above, just enough to get by and know there's so much more, so anyone who can master it and/or make it easier for me has my serious respect.

Okay then, you enjoy modern shading and lighting on top of tired worn out ten year old textures, bud. And no, they aren't doing all the textures. What you'll have is exactly what the screenshots show, a world made out of cheap looking plastic.
