Just another example of why SOE fails as an MMO provider. If they had any competence whatsoever, they would be the #1 MMO company.

How can you fail so hard when you possess the game that brought MMO's into the public consciousness (EQ), it's superior successor (EQII), the first ever FPS MMO (Planetside), and one of the most successful intellectual properties in the history of everything (Star Wars Galaxies).

Three adventure packs and eight full expansions in almost exactly 8 years. Just for this game.

Yeah, SoE is SUCH a failure.

Yeah, SoE is SUCH a failure. I'd love to have that level of failure in my own endeavors.

@aurickle

I'm not blaming the dev team, or the release schedule. If SOE is good for anything, it's pumping out content the fastest, (though not always finished), to get more money from subscribers. Although sometimes lacking in quality, SOE has pushed out content at a rate that pust every other publisher to shame. I digress, though--

My issue is with the overall, top-down management from Smedley. It's his pathetic handling of SOE's MMO arm that has resulted in the sad state of SOE. Wile it still looks like they are "successful," with all the opportunities that they had at their fingertips, SOE should have become a giant at least twice the size of Acti-Blizzard.

@TKOtheKDR What's odd is those very successes ALLOW for them to get away with screwing up. SoE almost routinely has problems that would be a death rattle for smaller companies and IP's.

Honestly though i am starting to agree with the sentiment smedley is screwing things up. Most of the problems I see at SoE and even what producers say are attributed to budget problems. Not too long ago all of EQ2 was supposed to get server upgrades, but instead only two got upgrades and they cobbled together the rest of the 'better servers' by simply using hardware that would be used for two servers just for one.

SoE's games aren't the most popular but they are ran like they are indie projects barely getting by. I highly doubt this since things like marketplace items have to have a profit margin easily in the hundreds of percents.

You digress and are woefully wrong. Trion puts others to shame for content, not SOE. To be fair, its made up of a ton of former SOE folk that were tired of the way things don't run at SOE :p

On point, this is terrible for EQ2's second coming out party. Anf lets be fair here it was the wee hours before the message came out. Which means lots of people sat at their PC for 18 hours waiting for the game to come up and it didn't.

This is something that should have come up in QA.

I blame Massively for the delay. What do you think will happen if you release a article that says, SOE releases EQII Age of Discovery before they actually open the servers back up lol. Just kidding around but seriously, the title from earlier could have read, SOE is preparing to launch EQII Age of Discovery.

Anyways, best to delay a release of anything if any major problems are discovered.

I know we ALL want it NOW... however I read this as too much overtime and the staff (who are probably overworked anyways) needed to go home and get some sleep. Its a game company and they are real people working on it, probably since 9 AM time... i cant remember the last time i pulled an 12+ hour shift, but i know they suck. so yes, sleep for SOE, and tomarrow, good game launch

Gaming hypocrisy by a LOT of people here. Everybody wants to get all tight about the game not launching now. But nobody seems to recall how angry they were when SOE launched SWG when it clearly wasn't ready. Everybody complains and wails and bickers about that. Everybody says "get it right." So SOE decides "hey, let's get it right and avoid a massive fail-launch" and what do people here do? Complain. Cut out the crap and get over yourselves. Look beyond the short-sighted wants and needs and realize that SOE is doing the right thing.

@(Unverified) Its simply the other side of the coin, these aren;t the same exact people. If one person wants it as soon as possible despite possible flaws, another wants it to bake until it is flawless regardless of how long it takes.

Honestly, I'm just not surprised. I'm not saying that as some passive aggressive barb or cynical statement. Just when they announced the delays and said it won't be good until tomorrow, I wasn't surprised.

Might want to add the post from SOE's CTO:

http://forums.station.sony.com/eq2/posts/list.m?start=225&topic_id=510214#5671179

It isn't exactly a full explanation of what went wrong, because I don't think most users would understand it anyway. But he does apologize, and to me it feels quite genuine that he's sorry that they were unable to do this update in a timely process.

Quick update: New ETA of 10 AM, in addition all my characters are now availible to me instead of just 7. servers are ofcourse, still locked.

Basically what happened is they're merging two games into one more or less, and as a result they have to change how they keep track of unlocks. This means they have to go through every account and change them over to the new system. Keep in mind this applies to every single soe account ever made, regardless of whether it played eq2 or not. That's a lot of accounts.

They have to make sure that no accounts were missed and nothing was messed up, or stuff like bought races/classes could be lost.

Like the poster above me stated, SOE is doing the right thing here. Yes, my wife and I were looking forward to the expansion today, but one day is just that, one day. they'll probably credit everyone with a day on their account and an xp potion or something to make up for it.

The delay and bugs are typical of EQ2 patches since Velious. Used to it now, but I think the only reason in 7 years that they've even remotley acknowleged the player base this time is poor AoD sales and hoping to retain players from going space bound. In all that time I've seen about as much from the Devs as I've seen in the last 2 days. That fact alone has me worried a bit. It will still be a buggy mess. Hey atleast they're consistent there.

Bronze and Silver members, even if they had been gold, live, platinum etc.. at one time, were not even allowed to play the 2-3 days of beta that we got invited to. C.S. even sent me a response that I had to subscribe. Guess which beta I played instead:) The one you don't want me playing SOE:P Main reason I'm not even remotely interested in anything the expansion has to offer. I personally feel like my job in EQ2 now is to log in and sort through the mess they made, then try and figure out the mess that is still Velious and itemization issues. Um BTW I paid for all of Velious and it's been a year, where's the other half of the content I paid for, you promised and I never received? Yeah, keep believing those false promises of FREE future content. Wish I could run my business like that, lol.

Just a shame, before Mr. FTP took over it was an incredible game.

Nice to see the usual irrational hate/calm common sense ratio of 95 to 5 in an EQ2 post's comments. So, let me ask everyone this: Hands up if you heard the news about SOE's December 6th plans and thought 'Wow, that's insane - an update, an expansion rollout *and* and F2P conversion, all on the same day? No one can do that and succeed!'

Yeah? Good? Okay then. Now then, which way do you want it: You can either be a) not surprised, therefore not angry/hateful/illogical; or b) surprised that it all went wrong and therefore angry/hateful/illogical.

Shockingly, you can't be both, and if you put your hand up to question one and then answered b), you, my friend, are a troll. And not the living-under-a-bridge-harrassing-fairytale-characters kind either. :P

Facts are pretty hard to swallow for the gullible...8 posts total anywhere about eq2 in 7 years, yeah must be a troll. Be nice if the Troll police actually read posts before replying or had the experiance of eq2 gameplay since release. Kinda gives a better perspective of what's happened over the years.

I actually thought here we go again with AoD's release and was right on the money...again.
