"If we had simply cloned a successful MMO, I think we'd have a battle on our hands, but we didn't," says TERA Europe producer Stephan Krippendorf. He's talking, of course, about the inevitable World of Warcraft comparisons that dog every new fantasy MMO (comparisons that seem particularly irrelevant given TERA's impressive visuals and divergent combat).
"When you dive into the game for the first time, swing a sword, cast a spell, dodge and weave in combat, you'll be hooked," Krippendorf explains in an interview at Videogamer.com. The sit-down covers a bit about the game's action combat mechanics as well as the story elements and the endgame political system, but most of the juicy tidbits center around the title's potential success in a crowded MMO market.
"I think TERA has what it takes to be a huge success though, regardless of WoW numbers," Krippendorf concludes.

I am really looking forward to trying out this game. I have been following it for a bit now, and it's caught my attention more than even SWTOR, which i got to beta test.

That's a curious statement. I thought TERA was emphasizing "fighting", much like Vindicus. but in a more open-world setting.
I don't know about the quest-systems or NPCs, but to come out and say, "We are different from WoW" is sorta like hearing/reading bad "Engrish" in a Japanese Manga.
I mean, I expect differences and didn't even think to make WoW comparisons. Now, he just seemed to have opened the door...

@Space Cobra The quest system is exactly like WoW, except that when I played the game a few months ago, you were better off grinding Hero (super elites and account for 80% of the mobs at level 44) mobs in a 5 man group than do a quest, because each mob gave more xp, chance for gold drops and took less time than a quest.
As for the combat system, well the reliance on the holy trinity much makes most fights tank and spank with the occasional block or teleport out of the raging monster way. Also I personally got bored of the combat system after level 20. Of course I really I did like healing though in that game because you really had to be active or people died.
To me, i might play tera, but it will probably be on a private server because I personally feel its not worth a monthly sub. If it was f2p I would jump on it so fast.

Possibly because post SWTOR's recent big beta weekends, SWTOR is being dismissed by many people as WoW with lasers.
@silver001
That's the one big turn-off for me. In most games I'd probably play an elf but if I play Tera I might have to be one of those giant thingies. They seem to be the only non-pornographic option.

@DancingCow The male versions are but the female someone how they made them a little slutty with some of their armor design. I mean its not as bad as I made it sound, but at the same thing I kinda felt embarrass playing whenever a girl came next to me.
but every other thing except possibly the combat and the sexual stuff (DD airbag female elfs, btw just look at the screen shot even if you wanted you cannot modify the body of any of the races) might be different from when I played it. I forgot to mention that.

That's a good point. They are trying to "beat their drum" in a PR-way and "trick" folks to thinking their game is "totally not WoW".
...but according to Silver001..."well......."
...seems to be still a bit WoW in there.

In all fairness they were at first as the combat is fun, the artwork is beautiful, and the game has some unique and awesome races such as the Castanics and the Elin... BUT the endgame was just the same gear-grind that WoW and 90% of MMO's offer so it got old fast. Combat and graphics are nice, but they aren't everything.
Personally I hope that they do add some sandbox elements at some point. An Archeage-like game with Tera visuals and combat would be perfect for me.

Well not to mention that there have been games like Asheron's Call around for 12 years now where you dodge arrows and spells. For Tera to act like they brought that to MMOs is pretty ridiculous.
I played an early version of Tera for the western audience. Yes the combat was fun for a couple of minutes and then it turned extremely repetitive. The "quests" in that game that I saw were 100% killtasks and nothing else.
The game could be interesting for PvP, the same way Asheron's Call is because of the skill in dodging and aiming attacks, but it doesn't seem to have much else going for it.

Didnt the korean game bleed most of its subs? Why are they taking years to translate a few lines of text noone cares about anyway.

Hopefully he's right but as for me I have given up on Tera when it comes to Asian titles the only one I care to follow right now is Archeage. However by the time Archeage releases in the West the world would have already come to an end so... ;-P

I wanted to like this game, but two things are keeping me away.
The combat seems less about dodging and more about running away from videos I've seen. Simply kiting an enemy doesn't seem as interesting as planned.
Secondly, the Popori. The men are bad enough, but the female of the race are human women with animal ears? Uhgggg.

game is nearly dead in korea, it has been overdue to be released and by the time it will be launched it will be fighting other games for subs. Hate to say it, but I will take ArcheAge over TERA...
