A lot of people have been complaining about Nexon's service recently. That really needs to be addressed when you revisit games.

Also you are a browser/grazer, Beau. Mabinogi is a lot different when you are a hardcore player-the rebirth mechanic qucikly becomes pay to win (as you can level up once a week instead of once every three weeks) and the lack of real content gets shown.

@Dblade By content do you mean raids and such? Mabinogi wasn't made with that in mind. It has TONS of conent, but nothing comparable to the standard MMO formula.

You have events going on most of the time, around 15 dungeons with different difficulties, repeatable exploration quests for each on the Elf/Giant continent, 15 storylines each with cutscenes and there own dungeon layouts, part time jobs that change as your standing increases, crafting that actually matters, field bosses, and tons of random activities like rafting, jousing, the runway game, etc.

Mabinogi is definetly not lacking on content.

@Dril Hey dril. No, I haven't blogged in a bit. Just came back to check massively out recently.

@Raiku Yeah, I know they added several generations of stories, but Mabi had very little to offer the hardcore player. The main mechanic winds up being rebirthing to grind stats. Considering the amount of money Nexon can suck from you, it gets old fast.

@Dblade Err, not to get in an argument, but I've been playing for little over 4 months now and I have Smash and Windmill rank 1. I can do hard mode dungeons which is way more challenging than any endgame raid for other MMO's, and I never payed for a rebirth.

@Raikulxox You could get that 75% faster depending on how much you spend. Or the people who spend the same amount of time have a lot more skills also ranked up to 1. GL though with stuff like Spirit Weapons doing no cash shop.

@(Unverified) I've been affected with two of my characters =/ Sad to see how Nexon treats its customers. Wish they'd hand off Mabi to another studio, but I know it won't happen since it was made in house.

I really liked Mabinogi a lot when I played it a while back. Very deep and absorbing world. In fact, one of the reasons I didn't persist with it for longer was the learning curve - I could see that I 'd have had to put in many hours just learning the ropes and I just didn't have the time to do it justice.

The other thing that slightly put me off was the odd 3d perspective which is unlike anything I've seen anywhere else. I thought it looked fine but it made my eyes ache after a while. And I never really understood the combat, although I imagine i would have got the hang of it in the end.

I would like to revisit it, but so many MMOs, so little time. I just tried another of Beau's favorites, Runescape, for the first time today. Unbelievable that I haven't tried it before now. Looks really good but again I can already see that it deserves a lot more time than I'm going to be able to give it.

@(Unverified) I'll definitely look more into it. There is a lot of news going on, especially in the world of FTP, so I rely on word of mouth to sometimes tip me off. Also, you can use our tip line (top right hand corner of the site) if you see anything that you might seem newsworthy.

Thanks, I'll see if I can investigate further!

Merchant Caravan feature sounds fun - and like the system in silkroad - the only (but very) good thing about that game.

Pretty much this.

Mabinogi is special to me and it's the only game that I loved it enough to write long diatribes over and over again.

To sum it up, the fundamental problem of the game is its core engine, which is horribly unoptimized according to modern standard. Weird drop of framerate when doing certain things with the UI, general lag at trade hubs where games with more advanced graphics and better polygon counts don't have... and most importantly, the game is made without security in mind. Within the game's history after being published in NA, several game-breaking hacks surfaced and subsequently patched, then it is known how "simple" it was to use those exploits and it is quite embarrassing to know it is been used by small amount of people for a very long time.

Despite the general incompetence of Nexon NA, the game cannot be fixed by anyone other than DevCat. DevCat kept adding new content without balancing the old mechanics that are painfully broken for ages.

In the end I see Mabinogi is a living evidence of how innovation voids itself for not having reiterations.

glad to hear they added WASD movement, and thats even the kind im used to (A and D to strafe and turn with the camera, I actually have a terrible time with games that force you to turn the camera with A and D, and often times quit if they dont let you change it)
I'll have to go back to this one sometime, cause it seemed amazing when i played it, though the apparent lack of content for highbies/hardcores is discouraging

The new trading mechanic sounds interesting. And I agree, more MMOs need this sort of non-combat gameplay.

I tested the game way back when it first was being translated for the English market. Even back then I had issues with the combat systems and movements. Every so often (a year or so) I return to see how it has changed and spend another 3 hours re-learning how to play the game.

Right now I am downloading the various updates. I think I'll go back to the original land and use Dolnor with his original Cowboy Beta hat and mosey around a bit...

I dunno...but reading Hindman's original piece on this game there's a glaring issue with its "wonderful pet system" that really bothers me. And it follows:

"The pet system in Mabinogi is unlike most you will find as well. You obtain pets through the cash shop, usually costing between two to fifteen dollars."

If you can see the slight of hand in this, you'll quickly find that you can't find pets anywhere else ingame. Not from it's NPC's, questing, critters or its auction house. Only from it's cash shop. Thus for those like us who wish not to pay a dime on this game, we are SoL with one of the games's core mechanics. So really it's not F2P. F2P would give you a limited selection of pets. Instead this Pay2Win mechanic is just a inconvenient subscription model with pets.

Why do I care?

I've been sorta interested in Mabinogi for awhile. And since I'm not the greatest fan F2P's, I don't usually venture to this column. I'm not here to hound Hindman's love affair for F2P's; that's his personal affair. But I am interested in trying out certain F2P's myself. And Mabinogi has been on my radar to try...

...but perhaps I missed the fine print in the beginning of this. But pets being a game maker tied into the cash shop is a no seller for me. If Nexon brings in a limited selection of pets system for non-payers, I certainly will give Mabinogi a try. Perhaps then I may even pay to have extra pets if I like the game to keep going. /shrug

@Utakata The pets add a LOT of value, so they are probably worth it. They add inventory space, some supply crafting mats, they can fight rather effectively, can be macroed to work with you well, and can be played as. I used to own a sheep, and it was hilarious fighting mobs, getting sheared, and roleplaying as one. I think that issue is minor compared to the other glaring ones people have listed.

I tried mabinogi during the north american closed beta since i got a key from my fileplanet subscription, and i did like the game however when it came to the release, as a eu player i was blocked for around 1-2 years before i was finally able to play the game,

Most enjoyable MMORPG I've ever played, hands down. Followed by CoH.

I've tried countless MMOs over the years both new and old, F2P and P2P, but none of them drew me in like Mabinogi. I was "addicted" to the game (on two separate occasions) for quite some time, which is exactly what I want out of an MMO. It really set the standard for how I view the genre. Unfortunately, there is no other game quite like it. Most MMOs hold my attention for a few hours at best. Anything beyond that I consider a huge success! Which is a shame, because conceptually I love this genre.

Sure, it was a money drain, the lag was atrocious at times (especially if you're not on the west coast) the engine is beyond obsolete and Nexon treats their users like unwanted step-children, but the positives outweigh the negatives in my opinion. With that said, the game started to take a dive in 2010 when they scrapped the Premium service (to everyone's discontent)

I tried going back to the game for the third time earlier this fall, but it was a nightmare. Housing board didn't work, more glitches than usual, the economy was in the trash due to all of the item/gold duping that took place in the summer. Not to mention the constant devaluing of "rare" items due to all of the events. Dye amps were 500K plus on Alexina. 500k. I saw that and logged off. Mabinogi has definitely seen brighter days.
