Considering his influence on the realm of MMOs, many gamers would argue that it's hard to dismiss Richard Garriott's thoughts on development out of hand. A recent interview with the man includes him predicting the fall of traditional console gaming in favor of portable devices, and the end of MMOs as a major market share compared to social and casual games. As Garriott puts it, the era of MMOs was chiefly between 2000 and 2010, and the explosion in social gaming is now a new part of the overall game development cycle.
Naturally, since Garriott's current company, Portalarium, is targeting specifically that demographic, he might be just a little bit biased. But he's hardly the first industry insider to claim that modern games need to be easily be picked up with little to no up-front cost. Take a look at the full interview for more, including Garriott's thoughts on how present designers are lazy and his self-comparison to Tolkien.

Ironically, BF3 has performed/gotten more attention on PC than consoles, so it was a very valid example. The Witcher 2 won't do well on Xbox, it simply is not console-oriented.
And you are the one not well if you truly believe the PC doesn't have a ton of AAA exclusives.

@LordPoncho You're just flat wrong on so many counts. BF3 has sold as well on the consoles, perhaps even better by now. We know that is passed the 8 million mark, and as of early November, 4mil of those were for the 360 and PS3. So yeah, the PC version is hardly crushing the consoles, if it's even leading at all.
If you really think people won't buy the Witcher 2 on the consoles than I just can't help you. RPG fans have been feeling very neglected this cycle and the presence of such a solid RPG on the console will drive sales. A lot of people don't have have computers that can play TW2 so they will pick it up for the console and enjoy what they can get.
Civ5...Really? The most panned release of a Civ game yet, lauded as the most dumbed-down and mind-numbingly boring of the series. The game has been on permanent sale since it's second month of release.
I know PC fanboys can't help themselves but seriously, to argue those three titles as evidence that consoles are fading? That's just plain stupid.

Haha delusional pc fanboy at it's best. PC gaming has been in decline for years, consoles and social have been doing nothing but growing. I'm a social game hater too but you can't deny the massive explosion in that part of the market.

Ooooh, what a revolutionary idea.
Seems like we've been seeing an awful lot of these bandwagon predictions lately. Self-fulfilling prophecy?
I hope not. I like not being behind in my tech purchase for at least five years.

I know everyone at Massively is giving and believes in charity and all, but giving this guy any time is just... I dunno. Maybe if everything this guy touched DIDN'T go down in flames I could take him seriously.
Then again, maybe that makes him an expert... in failure.

He's not even being novel with his "prediction". Like many/most tech heads and gurus, they live entirely within the bubble they're currently pushing. His peers in the mobile social gaming bubble are all pushing the "death of consoles and all gaming besides social mobile" because: 1. it's self-promotion and a biased narrative and 2. guys like this don't actually tend to be game players, and have a surprising lack of understanding of audiences who play games.
Garriott may have history with traditional games, but it seems he has long transcended that into the role of someone who is just out to sell his name and perceived clout as the only product.
But speaking more broadly, social mobile games aren't going away themselves; like all races to exploit the latest fad, the bubble has to burst and the natural levels establish themselves. The promoters of EVERY new trend will swear to you that their trend is the one, only, possible future. And that being involved with anything other than the inside track they occupy is the path to ruin and being left behind...

Wait, what? I thought PC Gaming was dying/dead. It's been declared that for at least a decade now. Now some idiot says Consoles are dying? Give it another two years for new consoles to come out and he'll be saying PC Gaming is dying, yet again.

In another two years, according to market analysts, PC gaming will have taken the forefront.
But everyone in here (A pc section of Joystiq, nonetheless) seem to be ignorant console fans, uneducated about the game industry and how it's markets work.

You want intelligent discussion, and yet you spout douchebaggery such as this?
What's worse, is that you can't find any real evidence to back up your "theories" of console games "in decline"....
We're you living under a goddamn rock for the past 6 years of this planet's existence? Did you not see the MILLIONS of games and consoles sold?
You need to remove your head from its snug place in your own bowels and come see the light. Console gaming is not dying, its not dead, and its not going anywhere anytime soon.
...and as bleak as things look for PC gaming now, it isn't dying either. Steam sales of games alone sprouts one gigantic middle finger in the face of anyone stupid enough to declare PC gaming's demise.

Did I ever state console gaming is dying? Did you ever think that they could co-exist? I love how everyone's so quick to jump at me with accusations of pc fanboyism when that's far from the truth as I have all three consoles, and play them all pretty equally. Yes, I enjoy pc games moreso, but consoles have their advantages as well.
