Considering his influence on the realm of MMOs, many gamers would argue that it's hard to dismiss Richard Garriott's thoughts on development out of hand. A recent interview with the man includes him predicting the fall of traditional console gaming in favor of portable devices, and the end of MMOs as a major market share compared to social and casual games. As Garriott puts it, the era of MMOs was chiefly between 2000 and 2010, and the explosion in social gaming is now a new part of the overall game development cycle.
Naturally, since Garriott's current company, Portalarium, is targeting specifically that demographic, he might be just a little bit biased. But he's hardly the first industry insider to claim that modern games need to be easily be picked up with little to no up-front cost. Take a look at the full interview for more, including Garriott's thoughts on how present designers are lazy and his self-comparison to Tolkien.

Someone, anyone who is close to this man just needs to put a gag on him, the more he talks the worse it gets.

I don't understand all these people who think casual gaming is something that will become the new model for gaming. Casual gaming, by definition, is not sustainable. Mobile/casual gaming is a distraction, console/PC gaming is an experience.

this.
Also Peter Moloneux, with his "my next game will be an experience unlike anything in gaming." In particular Cliff Bleszinski also needs a muzzle of some kind, with his crying about how used game sales are stealing the food from his kid's mouths.
I know a lot of it is just PR to get their games/companies in the light, these people, I truly believe make themselves just look sad and pathetic.

@Furdinand Not too sure if cloud computing is going to be such a giant game changer in the future. Might be because I live in Africa (and thus cloud computing isn't remotely feasible) or maybe I've just grown very very disillusioned with cloud computing since it's literally taking us back 30 years to monolith servers and dumb terminals (with a little virtualisation thrown in and a lot of outsourcing buzz).
Hybrid-Cloud computing I can agree with however, but that's already how a lot of MMOs work, they off put a lot of processing to the servers and all your PC does is render the results.

RE: Cliffy B crying about used game sales stealing from him.
We call that "poor-mouthing" where I'm from -- a situation where someone always claims poverty and hardship, when they've actually got more than most.
Poor-mouthing is considered bad form; a real douche maneuver, unworthy of respect.
Given the state of the economy, and the fact that Cliffy B. could probably afford to buy every person reading this article, and use us as lawn gnomes in his yard, I agree that he should just muzzle the whining.

I read part of that article, then had to stop. I think this guy personifies the phrase "Delusions of grandeur."
The interviewer doesn't exactly help either, it was more like a worshipping session than a journalistic interview.

Lord British is a tool. Now the 'gaming console' may be dead in 10 years, but not because they were useless. It'll be because they have evolved from a console just for gaming into a console that becomes an entertainment hub for everything we want. Gaming consoles will die; they already have as a strict avenue for just games. How many of us use our 360s and PS3s for stuff other than gaming now? The golden age of console entertainment is dawning on us right now, and we're at the vanguard. Be proud!

MMOs have only been getting bigger. Not necessarily WoW, but others have gotten a lot of the spotlight now. The market is expanding.
Social gaming is a fad, something that will die in time.
That said, I can see consoles dying out in the next 10 years. PC gaming has been on the rise the last year or so with tons of big name exclusives and PC-centric development (BF3, The Witcher, Civ. V, anything from Valve, and more) being released more and more often.

I see who the real fans are here...
I mean, I could easily back up that console sales are on the overall decline and PC games are on the rise, but never did I bash either side. So congrats to the morons downvoting me.

@Protoavis
I just half expected a somewhat educated conversation/discussion being on...well...you know, Massively? Not in a console article where console fans will flock.
But I guess the ignorant will stay ignorant and believe their beloved consoles will forever rule the day. (I like consoles, I like the games exclusive to them, but the PC exclusives, and playing games on PC is a far better experience overall.)

you sir are not well....at all.
you named 3 games, one is multi plat, and another is being ported to the 360, where it will sell more copies than the pc version. so where are the rest of the "tons" of AAA exclusives you're talking about?
