well it looks like WoW-vatar, but it is very clean and nice looking, and the ideas are for once, somewhat original. Plus it's a sandbox, and we dont get good sandboxes very often these days, so will keep an eye on this.

Getting an Asheron's Call 2 vibe from it. Which is weird since i haven't played AC2. It also looks like 2003... I love the style but i hope they can make it look a little more modern.

I hate to be that guy, but the graphics look like WOWTOR to me (which isn't all bad). In any event, to get at the gameplay purportedly on offer in Origins, I'd happily return to 2003 visuals.

Has all the right ingredients to perk my interest, but man, that guy didn't sound too excited/confident about his game, lol.

I'm totally sick of all the indie developers that come with their shitty looking graphics and "innovative" gameplay. At least put some mind into artwork. Look at Skyrim, even though it has mediocre textures, it still blows your mind by it's artwork and incredible visuals. Crappy visuals + crappy graphic = hurts our eyes, why can't indie developers understand at least that?

I think the budget between a indie and say a AAA studio is directly related to how far they can invest to make there graphics cutting edge.

@mrpibber
Look at CDPROJECT with The Witcher 2. Arguably the best looking game out there made on a budget of $8m. Theses indie people have crap graphics because they cut corners and think they can get away with it because it's an MMO.

@BigAndShiny

$8 million is not a small budget by any stretch. I'd be surprised if this title has a $1 million budget.

@JCSmith And there is no point in following it. You need millions and millions of dollars to make an MMO worth playing.

Luckily, Archeage looks to be in the same vein as this game. And has the budget.

@EndDream

That's debateable. There have been successful indie titles done with small budgets. However, what is not debateable is what the original guy in this response chain said, that indies cut corners and that's the reason for their poor graphics. The reality is that indie devs often only have a couple of artists available due to their budget, where AAA title might have 50+ artists.

I still don't know if the engine is bad, or if it's stylized. Either way, could a studio please, for once, make a desert environment look cool? Their either all sand or all brown and even though it is fitting, it's just boring.

@EventVox Pretty much this. I mean the graphics don't even look that bad but looking at that enviroment is an instant turn off for most.

people seem to be forgetting this is alpha footage, lol. The graphics - particularly the character models and animations should improve drastically over time as with almost any other game in early development.

@Resurge the style - on the other hand is pretty apparent, and will probably not change a whole lot

@Resurge I'll hardly ever knock a game for bad graphics, because 9/10 it is the style appropriate. And yeah, textures are pretty impressive in the grassy areas for alpha, same with the character animations.

Yeah, this is going to fail hard.

"What kind of game is this?"

"It's kind of an RTS/MMO/Sandbox/FPS." Story driven too, somehow.

If they can't afford to make environments that aren't unique enough to avoid WoW comparisons, I hate to see what they will do with the gameplay.

They should license the graphics (and hire the designers) from the apparently not going to be made Project D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNeYojOYLgc

First company that puts together a true sandbox with AAA graphics (and limited or optional PvP) will have a solid hit on their hands, instead of a minor niche game.

@Yarr it's really not the graphics, but the art direction. FFXI has really ps2 quality graphics, but the art direction and environments are unique, and make up for it. It's like writing-you don't need to have triple AAA writers so long as its good enough and different enough.
