Also, consider this: We got a (Bioware) forum handle and we got a (Bioware/SWTOR) account name. We even access to a security key. Now, again, maybe this is REALID or EA just trying to be "cute" with it's Origin store, but WHY do we need this separate (account) name to keep track of alts and Legacy points when our main (Bioware) account name should be doing that?

Can one "steal" Legacy points or mail them to other accounts, much like gold? So we get "Legacy spammers" in-game that will now sell us "Legacy Points" next to Gold Spammers?

I *highly* doubt it. I would think Legacy is tied only to your account and can't be traded. And now we know having a set Legacy-Account name is moot, because you can have a different one each server, so again WHY is EA/Bioware being inflexible with this weak surname system?

You know Star Trek online uses your accountname@toonname, don't know this is such a big deal. I think it's fantstic. It allows toon to be linked together in the world and be associated by other people. It also reduces your anonymity online, thus reducing the amount of things trolls like to do.

A bit silly, really. Interracial surnames? Hardly RP. If you want to enforce RP, do so: enforce it. Don't want to spend the man-hours on enforcement? Set up clear RP servers with naming restrictions that exclude clear absurdities. It's not hard to build a list of exclusions and combinations.

Why can't a twilek and a human share the same surname? Maybe a Human got it on with a Twilek , or a Zabrak with a Chiss Or maybe even a Sith pureblood with a Mirilan. They are humanoid so it can be possible.

This idea would be great if it where optional.

I'd rather go without a surname than be saddled with the same name for all my characters. Certainly I can't see any possible roleplaying reason for doing this and instead this will be something that most roleplayers will have to avoid. Let's hope Bioware starts making better decisions than this.

You'd think with all these wonderful writers making these amazing stories that are so good they are hailed as the fourth pillar holding up the whole game that somebody, somewhere in that development team would sit back and think "Wookies and Twi'leks with the same surname? That sounds a bit odd", and then they'd rework the system.

I like the idea in principal but it has a number of significant flaws.

Every character I had planned had a different name, no relation to each other now I am forced to associate them with each other even if they are a different faction because we can only have ONE legacy name on a server. It would have made much more sense to have 1 for Republic and 1 for Empire per server.. heck it would have made more sense not to tie legacy to names at all.. but it is what it is. :(

Here's what I'm in favor of: Players can choose whatever (appropriate) name they want. It doesn't have to be unique, etc... People have non-unique names in real life and we are somehow able to figure it out. In game whispers can be done with a number (your holonumber or whatever for swotor) and mail can be done with your name plus address.

Why is it so hard? Unique names are stupid.

Sure, I like the idea as long as there are enough names to go around. I'm so tired of stupid, in-your-face, pvp names.

I really don't like the idea of my characters all having the same last name. I am a roleplayer, but aside from that, it just sounds silly.

I don't get what the controversy is here. It is a system that reflects the player's legacy. One of the rewards is the OPTIONAL ability to show a shared surname OR TITLE among all the player's characters on a server.

There is nothing that indicates that this will be the only surname you will have the option to show. I know for a fact that it is not the only title you can show. They could very well add the option to have surnames that can be shared between characters on separate accounts; such as a husband and wife who play together and want to have the same surname showing.

Nobody ever said that the legacy was going to be the only way to earn a surname.

All they said was here is this legacy system, with a shared legacy xp among all your characters on a server, and the first reward you get is this name you can use as a title or surname.

People are assuming a lot of nonsense from that.

@Ordegar

And you're guilty of assuming the same game that will launch without something as rudimentary as a combat log will eventually grant players the option of displaying a non-unique surname as an alternative to the proposed legacy system.

You *might* be right, but c'mon... that's at least as big a stretch as those who are concerned the game won't.

@hansh0tfirst

This is a player legacy system. It is not a surname system; the surname OR title is just one of the rewards.

It is also optional to display it, and nobody can know what your surname is unless you display it. Nobody was complaining when there was no surname at all, so just pretend there isn't one and don't show yours.

:rolleyes:

No, people WERE complaining about no character surnames. There are threads on the forums if you search for them.

The problem is that this is an either/or system with no flexibility.

I was ready to just "live" with one name and be done with it, but now we are teased to have only one type of surname. No, while it may/maynot be player RealID# or not, the fact is we get ONE Legacy Name per server. How does this serve a Player to have multiple Player-Legacy names, one for each server he plays on? It doesn't. If this were a Player-account, thered' only be ONE PLAYER name account-wide, but it's over multiple servers.

This is just a useless tease for players that wanted surnames for their characters. I can't even fathom how a Player would benefit by it the way you suggest.

This reeks of RealID.

I already wasn't planning to play this game, but this just confirms my decision was the right one. My identity online is my business, and not anyone elses.

Again...this is another example of an idea that's great if it where optional.

Well ofcoarse RealID is optional currently as its apologists will point out...but that's not what the problem is with it. It's problem is that is forces you to use the name you signed up your account with if you decide to have RealID. Which for legal clarification is your real name. A simple username alias or an option to have one would of solved this issue that turned a great idea into a horrible one.

@Nenene actually no it's not your business. This system absolutely needs to go forward in every game because if you do something that's unseely and get banned from a guild or group people need to know it's you on your level 1 alt that just joined the guild to spam hatechat at everyone for banning you.
