@(Unverified) Yes, they have stated that you can turn off the display, and choose to display any of the Legacy names that are on the server your on from your account.

@Ragorik It is also available in several different forms

Ie.

Ie. Bob Mcawesomesauce

Or all your characters have a legacy title beneath their nameplate
Ie. Bob

What are names really costly to host on heir servers? Seems like an unnecessary restriction. Throughout the whole development process and what I have seen of the beta this summer/fall, it seems like Bioware just doesn't really understand the legacy of mmos and what is and isn't acceptable for a new AAA game. Restriction on player choice just doesn't fly nowadays, especially when it is arbitrary and there is no good reason for it. If it were a matter of technology, gameplay, and storytelling, and they felt that they had to leave out player choice in order to provide another experience, then fine at least there is an argument there, but this is just stupid. You don't need to force names on characters to make this legacy experience system work.

Seems like such a small thing, but it points to a larger issue. When the game was launched, I knew I wasn't going to play it. The beta just solidified that feeling. Here's more reason to feel that way. Dumb move.

I can see how looking at it in different ways can help the people who don't RP heavily. For those that do, maybe grouping up with people, or talking to your guild in determining what the "Legacy Name" means for them will help reconcile the system with their roleplay.

Or just turn off last names. I personally do like to put some RP elements into my gaming so I would use it on certain toons and leave the last name off on others. But it's not going to be that huge a bother to me no matter what.

At least, until we find out that "legacy levels" actually give us.

It does say you will be 'able' to choose a Legacy name - impying it's optional?

Either way I like it, having your alts contribute to your legacy rewards.

As for those talking about who one race wouldn't share the same as another race - maybe they can roleplay a group of aliens in servitude, being given a name by their family 'master'.

Actual system, as presented, is just crap.
They are presenting a pure player mechanic with a RP flavour, and mixing both.
Legacy system and rewards is fine.
RP surnames are ok.
Merge both and you get crap... as seen.
They have just to separate both worlds.
Keep your legacy system, and sell it as something vaguely rp, but not speak about families... nonono. Just a title, a personal one, you may show others. Perfect.
Allow surnames, or better, blank spaces, and all RP are happy now.

Agreed 100%.

Account-wide achievement unlock system: Cool.
Unique Surname that a family leader can share with other characters: Cool

Bastardized system trying to force the two into one: Not so cool.

@Viiral neither do I, so I am looking forward to this... perks across my characters... i don't care if one is Cyborg, and the other Sith pure blood...

Exactly, because this is not going to appeal to most RPers. Anything that limits your creative expression of your character takes away from the enjoyment of playing that character. This is going to appeal to people that just want something for having multiple characters.

I think RPers like it fine, but they should just tie it to our main accounts and be done with it and not bother with surnames if they can't/won't add them in flexibly.

Ah, the eternal struggle with naming systems... Seems like what ever you decide to use there are going to be problems, although forcing names on your characters is right up there among the biggest. Not that this the end of the world, i think there could be methods to conceal the last name from the game world and only display it in the UI, but they should have gone with something more elegant.

Optional. Not only can you use it as a surname but as a title identifying you as a member of that legacy such as the Alderaanian houses (such as House Organa, House Thul).

If you don't want to use it? Don't use it. Why are we arguing AGAINST customization in MMOs?

...because it is a very limiting form of customization.

They're linking rewards to the system, which makes it considerably -less- optional, unless we're going by the "Well you don't HAVE to have access to everything the game offers!" definition of "optional." Just allowing players to choose surnames for their characters without all the extraneous one-per-account/legacy points stuff would be in the spirit of customization options.

@Irem

The system itself will be about as optional as choosing skill points in swtor (or talents in wow) however the display of the surname or the title is optional. While I get the "It is a limited form of customization" argument the way I see it is that it is a system that did not previously exist within the client. Thus the options are legacy system, or no system at all. It is decidedly better to have the system than to not have it.

That said all of this stuff could be avoided if they removed the Surname component of the system and just allowed you a single space in your name.

I certainly wouldn't mind a space between.

They accept dashes, but in the last build, the name after the dash get uncapiltalized ("John-Smith" turns into "John-smith").

It seems strange for the same surname on opposing factions.
