I don't get it.Whats the point of all your characters having the same surname.I would prefere for Surnames like WAR did but different for every character

keeps people from being "unverified", who can then log into a toon and say whatever they want without any responsibility.

^^ I like this. This will help reduce the trolls. It would also be cool if you could ignore the trolls entire account instead of his/her individual toons.

Problem is that it is an optional system. Even so much as to you can enable and disable it on the fly (like a title) so it doesn't serve this purpose very well.

Sucks I will have to race to finish act 1 so that I may claim my rightful Surname of "McAwesomesauce"

I wonder if the surname will also be limited to no spaces...

It's essentially a one person guild. You get rewards and levels across all of your characters. The rewards give you an insensitive to use the system, and Bioware wants the system to be used to eliminate the amount of people who act like anon assholes.

Nowhere does a Dev say that it is a way for you or they to track trolls. WoW GMs can track trolls fine over many servers. Your Legacy name will change from server to server, plus you can HIDE your legacy name. You are assuming it will automatically be something like Cryptic uses (Name@Name), but if you will have a different Legacy name PER server, that can't be the case.

One, it is optional to display it. Two, it can be displayed as a title instead of a surname. Three, there is much more to it than just the shared name; that's just what they're starting with for release.

I really don't get what the controversy is.

@Celtar I don't, either. If you don't like the way they're doing things, there are plenty of games just waiting to be played.

No, I don't. Nothing I can see justifies hating it. They don't force you to use the surname. AND, they never said this will be the only way to have a surname.

It is a PLAYER legacy system, NOT a surname system.

Ah, okay, I get it. Yeah, most people don't have a problem with that (beyond any RealID# issues). Most people who have a problem with that WANT surname for their individual characters and the more different names, the better.

If the ability to have different surnames on one server were given by Bioware, most of the problem people have with this system would go away. They don't much mind a system of rewards or even a Secondary Player name, they mind the lack of usage to choose character surnames on an individual basis.

I think mmo naming is backward. all the technology put into making the game and they still haven't figured out a way to let everyone have the name they want for their character....the world is a big place, how do we manage if two people are called Bob?

As for the legacy surname system....strange, species cross naming seems odd but no mention if it is also faction cross naming, i.e. Jedi and Sith. By the way your Surname must be unique for this too....

I just hope you are given the option to decide who goes into the legacy at character creation because this messes up RP servers.

@(Unverified) From what I can tell each character can choose to have its own Legacy after the first chapter of the class story... So RP should be fine, but there is going to be perks attached to it. With that said, for RPers that want that perk you should think about making your main, and your main alt make sense so that you can lvl up at least one of your Legacy names...

Well, it can be nighmarish from a customer support standpoint. That's one reason SOE says they don 't like it.

I imagine database people wouldn't like it either.

@FrostPaw STO has a decent system. All characters are tied to your account name, you can name them whatever you want with a "nickname" and a full name. Probably the first sensible implementation of names, other than a less robust Guild Wars, I encountered in MMOs. LOTRO has a decent implementation as well, which also allows family building.

I just don't get why Bioware really was just so intent on copying outdated MMO systems. There's just no reason for it.

Well, in the real world, if I shout out "Bob!", every Bob on the planet doesn't look up and go "yes?"

Thanks to the wonders of global chat that's what would happen in an mmo.

It's like a House name, rather than your birth name. Frankly much ado about nothing. Sorry.

They should just change it - slightly.

All characters of the SAME race, on the same account. The player will also have a pop-up option to choose whether they want other races to share that legacy name when they create them - though if you create a character of teh same race as the initial legacy named one, theres no popup - if you choose to add the legacy name, it fills in the one for that race.

Thats ALL they need to do and everyone should be happy. People shouldnt be having multiple accounts- BUT, if lets say a family of players, or husband + wife want to share legacy names, then they can contact swtor devs directly for a change- since this IS the minority.
