If you're looking forward to the future of warfare today, you're probably keeping a close eye on the development of MechWarrior Online. And the developers are no doubt aware of this, as they've just posted a lengthy set of answers on the game's official forums, covering a broad range of topics from update speed to character development. While the answers confirm that at this point the software is still yet to see an alpha test, there's still a great deal of information therein.
Aside from a few answers that are likely to prove discordant come launch (such as plans for biweekly update patches), the team is aiming at starting off with a strong PvP environment with persistent world elements in a similar fashion to MAG. PvE will not be in at launch, but it is on the table for later release. That's only the barest summary of the information in the full set of answers, which should keep any intent pilot eagerly anticipating his or her personal 'Mech.

PvP first is probably so they can get the game out without being mired down with AI coding.

question #1
how much pay to win this game will be?
question #2
what will you do to deal with the community backlash when the game turns out to be pay to win despite all the promises of that not happening?

@Fabius Bile
put your feet up and count your money?
P2W is, sadly, the most profitable of all online game pay structures thanks to it's natural target: the self entitled, no life, ass-hat.
either that or you can grow up, get a life, and stop crying if the game you want isn't released under the business model of your choice.

@Fakeassname wow, you really don't get it. P2W is unacceptable, period. It's not about favorite business models. It's about a fair playing field. Furthermore, you are dead wrong about it being the most successful model.
However, that has nothing to do with this.

They should make Bloodnames a prize for reaching max rank with a player slot. Oh wait, there aren't any Clans yet.

No PvE? You have to be kidding. The scenarios of Battletech, the love of rampaging through the different zones in Mechwarrior, the buildup of interesting stories in the franchise, and none of it will be there at launch?
So if it is just PvP, how does this differ from the free Mechwarrior 4 Arena setup they have now? You can only play so many rounds versus other players before you strive to go venturing out in a wasteland because there is a runaway train carrying precious cargo!

Doing a Battletech version of World of Tanks is the best way of doing it.

Just a PvP Arena Game, I'd bet money the game will either be a raging success as that and so PvE will either never be implemented or it will be put in and be such a sucky afterthought that nobody plays it for the PvE anyway. Then they will come out like Mythic and say everybody wants PvP oblivious as to why their PvE community didn't stay.
The problem is, they will sell better mechs and weapons, they're going to, you know it, they know it, just like World of Tanks, those better mechs and weapons will be bought by the few and they will piss off the many. They will allow players to skip all the effort free players put in to earn their rewards and thus free players will resent them and it will divide the community that sticks around.
Free Players will be "content" for paying players to feel superior to.

Opps, read this...
""[MATT C] Each game spawns its own dedicated server, these are not persistent like WoW, as mentioned that would take us into MMO territory. There is persistent game world information, i.e. match results are communicated to affect the balance of power in the Inner Sphere, who owns what planet etc. but there is no true persistent world, more of a persistent meta-game.""
So basically this is a Solaris like game. ie just player vs player dueling. :( Insead of Dueling, battlefields that you can affect change to planetary faction/ownership etc. The game is "much much" less then it could be.
Kesmai's old MPBT 3025 on GEnie was a "deeper" game since we could invade planets, turn over ownership and if we drove a wedge far enough into one of the other Houses actually attack their capital planet. You could move units etc. That was 20 freaking years ago!
So I went from totally hyped for this game to oh well. :( I want more then a lobby dueling system.

@Celtar
Btw as a bit of additional info, I actually "had" been in the process of ramping up my system. ie: In March I was going to blow 4k on a new system (2k of that just on video cards) and also was investigating into a new chair, throttle, joystick etc. Was looking to spend another couple grand on that.
I wanted to recreate the set up I had in the 1992-1997 frame back when I played Kesmai's version of MW on GEnie. Back when Thrustmaster's set up rocked. heh.
Ah well, no need to now, glad they came clean with that write up so I didn't bother to invest in all that. If they aren't going to go for the full Mechwarrior/ Battletech game play/world, then there is no need for me to invest that money into new hardware. I "need" more then just dueling to my game play.

I think making an EVE like game with RTS elements a la Mech Commander would be much better for PVE gaming.

I do find it interesting to see this site covering this game. I mean, don't get me wrong, I for one ame incredibly excited by a new Mechwarrior game with online elements, but at no point in the initial reveal or any information released has there been any indication that it will be an MMO. I'm pleased to see this latest update clarify this by coming straight out and saying "yeah, we're not an MMO." It would be unfortunate for people to start hating it for it not being something it was never trying to be. What they have said so far makes it seem more like a sort of MAG/Global Agenda hybrid. Which could be ace.
