As you level up in the different crafts, you get different skills that you can use during crafting as well, to give you more options than [Standard, Rapid, Careful, Wait].

Hope you find a good party!

Thanks Matt! I enjoyed your minority wins style of democracy! But it is tough to get a party at level 10 so I think you made the right call.

The crafting mini-games in FFXIV were really well done. Which is expected out of a game that has "botanist" as a class.

you know why they made this mini game? back in FFXI Fishing was botted pretty heavily, not sure too much about the other Crafting/gathering skills but to combat it, they put in the mini games. for Fishing if the fish was pulling right you had to pull left so on till you caught it.

This is by far the best answer I have seen to some of the botting that goes on out there

Well all of this is kinda nice, but since FXIV 2.0 will introdude WoW-like changes, and mechanics like AH and especially cross-server LFG, game concept will propably change a bit and I think that crafting might became less important :/

Anyway FIXV ideas are nice, at least they are much better than usual 'click and done' systems in most mmorpg's.

@smartstep Not going to happen. crafted gear is the very best in the game, and they won't change that, they've just added the materia system which enforces it.

crafting has always been important and a priority to SE. Hell, the crafts are entire jobs in themselves, they're not going to abandon that.

@Azules

Hope you're right, but I will believe that when I see that (what I mean by that is when f.e. 6 months after FXIV 2.0 crafting still be priority).

Sounds very much like EQ2's crafting, with the balancing act between quality and durability and the different 'responses' you can make during the process. Nice work! :)

I would REALLY suggest finding yourself a linkshell. Like really. Nobody is going to pick up a lvl 10ish party, it's too fast progressing solo at that level. Find an LS and ask for some help, Linkshells are also a vital + point for FFXIV, as the community therein is top notch.

Shposhae is lvl 17 recommended, I believe, also. Not really anything for groups to do but levelling together before then.

Thats not gonna happen. This guy is only playing once a week.

Its too bad really because he's only experiencing the tiniest tip of the iceberg in everything he does here.

He levels a lancer to 10 (in 4 weeks)
He levels a crafter to 3 in 1 day
He levels a gather to 2 in 1 day

What a shame about not being able to find a lowbie group. That's the exact same problem that stopped me from experiencing anything as a newcomer to FF11 (besides it's unintuitive clunkiness).

Glad you were able to find a bright spot in the crafting! I really enjoy crafting in my RPGs and it sounds pretty good that FF14 has an involved system like EQ2's.

I was inspired by the comments section of the last Choose your own adventure column and I bought FF XIV. I'm amazed at how much better it is since I played the beta. I'm having a BLAST!

As a fairly new player, I take extreme issue with Matt. Either he is incredibly lazy, or he is a liar.

I've been in four groups in the last three days of playing. I wasn't even looking for groups. I just happened to see people shouting and joined them. If he's not finding groups, he must be playing on a dead server.

Just to be clear, as a new player I played solo with my first class from 1-10 in a few hours. Those few hours include doing the introductory quests and, well, learning how the heck to play the game. It takes a while to get used to. I was by no means trying to power my way through the levels. In my three days of play, I'm now level 25 on my lancer. Just to test it out, I leveled a pugilist to ten to see how long it would take someone who kinda knew what they were doing. It took me a little over an hour.

He leveled a crafter to 3 and a gatherer to 2. That means he literally harvest 1 or 2 nodes, and made 2 or 3 things. Wow Matt, the minutes you spent playing! How did you find the time!

In the last edition, he claimed that he got tired of doing a billion of the same levequests over and over again. Bull. You only get 4 every 12 hour. If he did do a lot of levequests, he wouldn't be level friggen 10.

If Matt is getting paid to write this article, the guy is STEALING from Massively. If I did my job this poorly I'd be fired is a second. I sincerely hope he is not getting paid for this.

I'm sorry if I'm coming across as crazy. I fully expected leveling to be hard when I bought this game. I thought previous comments were exaggerating when they were complaining about Matt being lazy. Now that I own the game myself, I'm furious at the nerve of this guy. What an absolutely terrible "journalist".

Thats what I was being so disappointed with last week. Matt is telling us his experiences playing FFXIV but he completely lacks EXPERIENCE with the game itself.

FFXIV isn't for everyone. I'll be the first to admit that. But it's not a terrible game either. This guy is reporting on the most miniscule amount of play time into each CMA update. FFXIV is leaps and bounds better than it was in beta, currently is better than is was 5 months ago by a lot! It's only getting better.
In all honesty if you're going to report on an MMO put the time into it. I don't care what game it is. Do it right or don't do it at all.

This game is much better than at beta, and it's only getting better. I encourage everyone to give it a try. It's only 20-25 dollars. If you end up not liking it, you don't lose much. =P

Crafting and gathering is the best part of the game. With the new changes to the classes coming soon, it may be the only thing I still love. The server Matt is on, is a mid pop server, and unless you speak Japanese, you might have a hard time finding a party. Going to Uldah was your best chance and yes most of the parties are higher level. Dungeon finder would be a great addition to this game.

@shanatc They are adding a dungeon finder. I believe it's going to be added to 2.0, but I haven't looked at the road map for a while so it may be sooner.
