The change from CORPG to a full action RPG F2P MMO is a change that just made sense for us. Perfect World wanted to go big. Expand everything. Do more. Do better. Take your time. Really blow it out. Pushing into 2012 allows us to make these changes. Transitioning into a full-featured action RPG, free-to-play MMO allows us to reach a whole new audience of people. Never underestimate barriers to entry. With a free client, anyone can play. Try it. Where's the harm? It's better for the game, better for us, better for D&D and infinitely better for fans and gamers. With Neverwinter, we're going to prove that F2P does not describe a type of gameplay -- it only describes the fundamentals of a business model.Velasquez also discusses user-generated content and the challenges of working with a famous IP. "A ton of effort is also being made to make sure that we produce an authentic D&D experience," he says. Head over to MMORPG.com for the full interview.
Neverwinter was 'almost ready to ship' before F2P MMO retooling

Last month, we reported that Cryptic Studios and Perfect World Entertainment were changing gears to render the upcoming D&D Neverwinter game more of an MMO than originally planned, complete with action combat and a cash shop to dispense vanity items and perks. Today, MMORPG.com published an interview with Neverwinter Lead Producer Andy Velasquez, in which he notes that the original title was "almost ready to ship," but the revision is nevertheless for the best:

It wasn't even designed as an MMO? It may have been close to shipping as an RPG or RPG with coop. but it's going to take awhile to have it ready as an MMO. That's a timely transition (when done properly).

@HokieKC
It was going to be more of an online only rpg that was mostly multiplayer and then they just changed it out to a f2p full on mmo.
I hope it is good or it might be a looonnng time before we get another D&D mmo.

Yea.. there's the catch. It is in the parenthesis. Cryptic has show to be much more of the leaning "release it and then try to finish it" even more so than the new standard set by the MMO industry.

So. D&D Neverwinter will be a Free-to-Play MMO after all. Thanks, PWE and Cryptic. :D

I really don't doubt it was almost ready to ship. Now, whether or not the game was almost FINISHED is another question. Cryptic is NOTORIOUS for shipping games before they're finished.

'Almost ready to ship' has a different meaning for Cryptic than most of us. Looks like PW has been good for them though, forcing them to take it further - something both CO and STO desperately needed at launch.

@HitechLolife I like this comment because it can be stretched a bit further. A lot of people blame Cryptic for releasing things early.
I'm not saying that they aren't partially to blame, but a look has to be taken at their last Publisher, which was Atari. I'm sure Atari had a HUGE say in when something needed to ship by, and they didn't want any excuses. I think PW is the best home for Cryptic, and hope that they thrive under better leadership.

@Jeremy G Yep, that's very fair. It's hard to know who promised what in terms of development time. I imagine the guys in the trenches actually making the game would have taken as much time as they could get.

See Cryptic, not everyone is as stupid as you think they are. Grin.
It is always entertaining to see what stupendously dumb ideas the suits at these companies try to shove down gamers throats.

I really hope they are using the Angelica 3D game engine for this
mmo. Cryptic's engine is not made for massive large worlds.

@BubleFett One, they're using their current champions/sto engine. Two, this was never going to be a large, open world game. Think a mixture of DDO and the old Neverwinter Nights game.
Before, it was closer to Neverwinter Nights. Now it's closer to DDO. But there's still that mix in, and I'm glad that PW made them take their time with it. Cryptic screwed up badly with early releases of Champions AND STO, and it sounds like they would have done it a third time.

I'm not expecting this to be good, Cryptc does good character creation and fails at content creation. Then they add further insults by nickle & diming the players every opportunity.

I am hesitant to cheer for this game.
1. Champions Online F2P sucks (it might be a different experience as p2p)
2. PW games have always been pay to win.
STO will give me a better idea on how well they do with f2p. Either pay to win or content restriction. I am hoping they would turn this game into a game similar to DDO.
