The success notices keep rolling in for DC Universe Online. This time Sony Online Entertainment is touting the fact that one million new players have joined the game's community over the past week. Executive director of development Lorin Jameson says that the numbers are split 50/50 between the PC and PlayStation 3 platforms, and he also intimates that more good news is in the works for fans of the superhero MMO.
"We have a lot of exciting things coming up for players to enjoy in the game and are thrilled at the initial enthusiasm for the game's free-to-play transition," Jameson said via press release.

I'm 2 of those million (PC and PS3), but I've already uninstalled both versions.

Been enjoying the hell out of it, I'll say that much.
Wouldn't have minded paying, either, the initial box price is what dissuaded me from looking at it any closer.

Now that it's F2P I hope more people check it out.
However, as a lifetime subscription owner who now hates SOE you should be weary to give them any money. They are without a doubt the worst MMMO company in the world when it comes to customer service and developer feedback (information, communication or documentation). For every one step they take in the right direction you can be sure they will manage to screw up something horribly in such a way as to negate any of the progress they made.

This game is fun when I am able to log on and play it. However, It isn't a game I would pay a monthly sub for.

I was in the beta, bought the box and paid and played for a few months, but ultimately this title just didn't feel like a subscription MMO. I'm happy they went the f2p route. The game is awesome in short bursts and is therefore ideally suited for a freemium/premium/whateverium model.
Now all they need to do is take care of those queues, disconnects, hanging and massive lag spikes.

I play this game and it is a fun casual MMO. I think the numbers will settle back to around 500k or so. I would like to see the devs add more game content for all levels, maybe some new PVP stages and alerts.
Lets hope they can keep some of the people they got to try their game.

Numbers like this are always a bit deceptive. Free accounts create have very little correlation to free accounts that are consistently active and generate revenue.
I don't doubt that they are making more money now. and I don't doubt that their active players are up as well but a lot of people also create a free account just to "check it out". I know I probably will some day but I doubt I would play a superhero game all that much.

I tried it, liked it as well. What killed me were the console type interfaces for PC. Why in the world can't a PC version of a game allow a mouse to work? All the chat stuff you had to manually go through the screens. It was odd.
Also could not mouse over abilities especially when you did the Hero PvP. There was a target dummy there to test out the abilities because you couldn't mouse over them to see what they did.

That's what irritated me about the Legends PvP too, you have no idea what the skills are. I did a bit of searching on the net tho and you can get detailed descriptions of all of the 'legend' character skills.
Otherwise I'm enjoying the hell out of this game. I was too busy to try it at launch and I've been dissapointed with enough MMOs to not jump on them until they've been out a little while. Glad they changed the business model because I'm having a great time now.

I had that problem last night too, when I chose Illusory Form for my mentalist. It has one icon to activate it, and 3 sub-icons for follow-on skills - without tooltips, it's a real pain. Definitely, definitely the UI needs optimising for PC. Surely that could be a client-side fix that wouldn't impinge on the PS3 players? There's so much that needs doing to that damn UI. Otherwise though, it is indeed a brilliant, good fun 'casual mmo'.

That is more than LOTRO did, but I think the action combat (different to the norm), is encouraging more people to give it a try.
Let's hope they stick around and it proves to other developers that you don't need to copy WoW anymore.

Played the game from Dec (Beta) to last month on and off. I finally deleted it after realizing that I had been playing it so often and for so long, that I forgot that it wasn't very good or very fun. I was just in the habit of playing it. Only way to break that habit was to delete the whole damn thing as I sure as hell will NEVER download those 20GB files again. Don't miss it in the slightest.

I'm currently loving this game, but like Lenn said, it's an awesome game for short bursts. That's the main reason I didn't pay for a sub after I left the beta.

Hmm... 1,000,000 new players. 1000x increase in players. Divide one million by 1,000 and... you have 1,000. Something is not right on the numbers.

First weekend they saw 120,000 new accounts created, since Free to Play launch (just over a week), they've now seen 1,000,000 new accounts created.
The 1000% increase is down to the concurrent users (CCU), so the number of people on the server at the same time and really has very little to do with the number of new accounts created. But is the more important figure in the long run, because CCU is a good indication of active users, unlike registered accounts.
