Lineage fans have a lot to be excited about this week, as NCsoft has finally announced the third franchise entry at G-Star 2011. Lineage Eternal is shaping up to be a throwback to the original Lineage title due to its overhead camera, and it also sports a fairly unique "drag-and-hold" mechanic designed to make combat more immersive via drawn mouse patterns for various actions like spell-casting.
We say fairly unique here because while the mechanic is new to AAA MMO franchises, a similar idea was employed earlier this year in the Shadow Cities iPhone game. You can get a look at the mechanics in action, as well as over 14 minutes of Lineage Eternal gameplay, in the trailer after the cut.
I loved the visual style, as well as the combat. I loved how you can draw lines and the mobs get thrown back in that direction. All kind of cool stuff. Depending on the pricing structure, I am very much interested in buying it.
Looks like a very well polished single player action RPG and I mean that in a good way. I look forward to seeing how the MMO elements come into play in later videos.
It's certainly pretty, but I do not find mouse-gesture input to be immersive at all. I don't mind a top-down or isometric view, but drawing glyphs on the screen isn't very action-y to me.
I think gesturing can be very immersive. If you remember Black & White from Lionhead Studios, it had gestures for miracles. But what made it immersive was that there was no UI for the miracles, instead of a toolbar icon they were an actual in game object and you would summon it by gesturing. LE though seems like it still has a toolbar, and that makes me ask a question - why are you making me draw when it could just have been an icon/keybind?
But the video still looks very exciting. Initially i was sort of 'meh' when news of LE came, but now i'm glad i watched this video, looks great.
Wow that really looks amazing, I hope it plays just as awesome as it looks! And it is nice that a game is announced...with a long GAME PLAY video and not just some cg hype. As pretty as the cg is, it does nothing compared to what this trailer does imo.
