I love A Song of Ice and Fire, but I really don't see it working out as an MMO. For one thing, magic is so rare that most people don't even know it exists - this means warrior and rogue archetypes would be the only options. Maybe they could get away with a Red Priest class, but even that would be stretching the lore quite a bit. Since there are very few fantastic creatures in the setting, all of the players and the vast majority of enemies would be human.

Maybe they could do something completely different from anything that's been done before, and have an MMORPG that focuses on political intrigue more than endless combat. That won't happen, but it would be interesting if it did.

@Spacegrass

It really would depend on what time setting they had the MMO in. When dragons had a strong presence in the world there was actual magic. This is why the Maesters have a link on magical study. When the dragons started to diminish, so to did the magic. While there are not many records of very flashy magic being used in the world, it was used very heavily for crafting and as a supplement to normal techniques in combat, such as flaming swords.

This would lead me to believe that you could pull off a magic class, but it would be far more supportive than traditional magical classes.

that is what I was thinking. I've said in the past that if a SoI&F MMO were to be made, I would rather see it set thousands of years in the past when the Children were still a presence, the First Men were new to the land, and the Long Night was coming...

Bigpoint?

Developing one of my favourite IPs of all time, and it'll probably be a themepark at that?

Why?

Why?

Also: this game won't succeed unless it's really, really good. A person's willingness to put up with substandard entertainment is inversely proportional to his or her intelligence. Because A Song of Ice and Fire fans are far more intelligent than the average fantasy enthusiast, they won't be playing a game that isn't great.

Yeah..no. the GoT books are all about politics and intrigue and characters, and not really about diverse cultures, classes, races and epic conflicts of good vs. evil, all the things an MMORPG needs to appeal to a large audience. I just don't see it working. The Wheel of Time books however, now THAT is fertile ground for a an IP to turn into an MMORPG.

I am calling it.

It's going to be a Kingdom Building RTS thingie similar to "Might and Magic" (cloned). At least have some elements of it.

Or maybe the Facebook version will be....

This is wrong on countless levels. So, instead of the rarity of Brienne and the Mormont fighting women, we're going to have tons of female warriors socially accepted by the rigid societies in this game taking on a masculine role. That's just not Song of Ice & Fire. I could go on, but what's the point, really? The IP just doesn't work for a million reasons in MMO format.

Can I get a quick description of the image used for this article?

My guess: Melted helmet. But even boiling oil wouldn't do that.

There should be some sort of statute of limitations on "spoilers." Six months seems like ample time to watch a 10-episode show. I guess I should also avoid mentioning that Vader is Luke's dad, lol.

And next your gonna tell me that Chewbacca dies under a giant meteor and that it was approved by George Lucas himself!! (A meteor made out of GOLD!)
