PvP...Ultima Online was a horrible experience for me.

Generally nothing. I prefer to try it for myself and see. It'd be a shame to miss out on something it turns out I'd enjoy even if I haven't enjoyed similar mechanics or features in other games. There's no substitute for the actual experience.

FFA PVP
Overly strong emphasis on PVP in general (Sorry Aion and EVE but no thanks)
Perma Death
relatively poor visuals / animations
Raid centric end-game.

An abundance of bikini armor in the screenshots. In the marketing it can be forgiven as a necessity of the times and industry, but it doesn't need to carry through to the gameplay.

The biggest thing for me, right now, is if I see a game that uses the the aged EQ mold, I'm not even going to bother looking into it. Forced grouping, holy trinity, gear grind, huge focus on raiding, etc. I've done that for 11 years, it's time for something different.

ageing graphics, I know it's silly to bag out games based on how they look but I'm incredibly vein about my toons and when they look terrible it really puts me off.
F2P so far all the f2p games i've tried just havn't gripped me at all, hopefully firefall turns out alright but i'm not holding my breath.

That's pretty much it really the only other thing that comes to mind is companys that don't seem to care about earning your money, arguably this could be leveled at blizzard without much fear of argument especially when compared to trion I log on rift after a few months hiatus and parts of the world have litterally changed and they're throwing rewards at me for signing back up during a half brithday and for subscribing for a certain length of time not to mention countless gameplay additions changes.

I log on wow and besides new raids of which I have no access to(again something trion is addressing) there's just a daily hub which nothing points out to you.

So to sum up this rambling tirade, I look for a dev team/company that seems to care that I'm there.

Anime graphics.
Grindy gameplay.
Permadeath.
Gender-locked classes.
Ugly character models.

That's about it. If I research a game and it doesn't jump out at me by having good gameplay or good graphics, I probably won't play it. Even still, I give games I try one shot. If I don't like it within the first 15/20 minutes of playing it, it's gone.

and the big one:
relying on "player created content" to fill out your game (looking at you Eve)

- Lack of respecs: if there is either no respecs, or the respecs are too hard to get or require spending real money, I won't get into a MMO game. Exception granted to games that don't really have a spec, obviously.

- Allowing players to hamper too much each other's gameplay. Usually seen as enforced PvP anywhere, but there are other ways to do this.

- Losing too much progression on death. This includes things like XP loss, too much XP debt, item loss, etc.

- If it seems like too much work to be ready to fulfill all group roles in the game. I prefer if a single character can fulfill all roles; failing that, I look for games where keeping multiple endgame-capable alts is as maintenance-free as possible. Incidentally, it's why the only classes I ever considered getting to max level in WoW were Paladins and Druids: with those, I could have a single character able to do any role.

- Pushing players too hard to play in groups. I want to have the *option* to group, not to be forced to do so; more so because my play schedule is too chaotic to keep consistent groups. This includes making guilds absolutely essential, though I would cut a lot more slack for a game that allows players to belong to multiple guilds.

- Conversely, in a MMO game with a subscription, having too much content that can only be done solo. Again, I want to have the option to play in a group; if I'm to always be playing solo, I might as well be playing a single player game without a subscription.

Well after six years of WoW, trying almost every MMORPG released after about two years in to WoW, installing and uninstalling most FTP games multiple times.... I'd have to go with the leveling grind on this one Bob.

My draws? Lots of people (even if the majority are mouth breathers... cannons need fodder!) Session based gaming (think along the lines of FPS matches and DOTA games.)

I hate spending hours upon hours in a game only to better yourself slightly (and WoW made it fairly easy compared to the likes of EQ and such) The most fun I'm having right now is after finishing Assassin's Creed and Prototype, I'm all about Hero Attack in SCII.

So I guess in summation, I DON'T LIKE MMORPGS NO MORE!

Once again the term "carebear" is misused. It should more properly be applied to FFA PvP'ers who are only interested in griefing and ganking through either superiority of levels or superiority of numbers. You can't get more carebear than that. Not all FFA PvP'ers fit that description of course, but a good many do and they spoil the reputation of FFA PvP for the rest and so limit it to a small niche market appeal in the West.

As for the original question, I'm turned off games that have non-consensual PvP only servers and/or cartoony anime graphics in which the only visible difference between the genders is that the males look prettier.
