The recent spate of MMO industry layoffs isn't discriminating in terms of company size if the latest rumors are true. We've just been informed that one of Blizzard's golden boys has been served his walking papers, joining hundreds of devs from the likes of NCsoft, GamersFirst, GameForge, and CCP in recent weeks.
John Staats, the senior level designer on Blizzard's secretive Titan project, has been let go, according to our tipster. Staats has been with the company for over a decade and is responsible for some of World of Warcraft's most celebrated content including all the raid dungeons, Blackrock Mountain and Booty Bay, and numerous other instanced dungeons.
Staats was also described by Jeff Kaplan as the "hero of the WoW dev team."
[Thanks to Steve for the tip!]

I'd imagine there is more to this if it is true.

My guess is he either had a serious clash of vision with higher ups, started asking for way too much money, or had some sort of scandal or personal situation.
Still it's a tragedy to see any one in the gaming industry lose their job when Bobby Kotick and John Smedley still have theirs.

"WE NEED MORE PANDAS IN OUR NEW MMO...." "But..." "PANDAS" "I can't..." "****ING PANDAS JOHN, PANDAS"

This doesn't really tell us a thing. As far as we know, he got a bit too much into the cooking sauce and pulled a *Tseric at a formal function. Even though it may likely to do with performance issues since this article states no one else was laid off. But beyond that is anyones' guess as to why. And we will likely never know.
*Note: Go look that up incase anyone is wondering.

@Utakata
good post.
I agree.. probably performance related or could even be something more serious (personal conduct).
misleading article a bit..

Maybe there are no instances or raids or cities in Titan....so he wasnt needed.

@Azzura If he's as good as Tigole claimed, I'm sure he'd be welcomed back on the WoW team, or any other team.
When you're that important and supposedly good at your job, and you're laid off from a project that's going full steam ahead, it indicates some other kind of trouble at the office.
Maybe he had a pattern of inappropriate behavior. Maybe he called his boss a dbag at the company halloween party. Maybe he was trying to unionize the office. The possibilities are really endless, and we'll probably never know.

I have a feeling it isn't job related but personal or ethical related. Blizzard has very high hiring and Ethical standards..in other words to get a job sweeping floors there you have to squeak...and keep squeaking to keep your job.
I'm betting it's substance abuse or he violated the ethical standards of the company.

No matter where I look, I see him tied to WoW... how do we know he was indeed working in the Titan team?
Why are you comparing this to mass layoffs from CCP, NCSoft etc when this has obviously nothing to do with money ?

I wonder if he broke some Blizzard policy or rule. Or if being called the 'hero' of Blizzard's greatest selling ever MMO got to his head.

Maybe he spoke out against the direction Titan was taking a little too much? No one will know the reason but fun to speculate.

I would hesitate calling the firing of one senior designer "lay offs". I agree with other posters speculating it was a firing due to reasons other than Blizz's economic health or the resources being used on Titan.

Most likely a clash with managers. Someone of this seniority is rarely let go unless its a serious disagreement they can't solve.
He may have been driving Titan in a direction they didn't want to go.
However, with all the new about MoP being very "unexciting" (I quit when I heard it) this is strange news indeed.
