They could go the way BattleStar Galatica's cash shop went with all the weapons and mechs as easily bought but hard to upgrade unless they have money.

I'm interested in this game but I'm not counting my chickens before I get to try it......I assume it will be PvP matches only and PvP is always a hit and miss with me.....sometimes its fun, sometimes I just get tired of having to fight against players like in every other game.

yeah, thats what they all say. Reality seems to tell a different tale. I'd take those words to heart as much as a politician's.

I've never seen a single game company claim their F2P game is pay-to-win. But most are nevertheless. The title of F2P has become synonymous with greed and low quality, and it's usually accurate.

some hater of F2P out there is in a nerdrage just ready to pounce on this model too. I can see it now "Because you can buy new mechs it's P2W" attributing it to something akin to buying cosmetics somehow making it a P2W in these poor saps minds. The accelerated acquisition is probably going to be a target of these nerdragers as well.

Game companies are ALWAYS telling there'll be no pay-to-win. I've never read any company admitting that their game will be pay-to-win.

So why should I beleive when I hear same old, for 20th time?

I guess I am just too cynical anymore as we have all been lied to by corps too often.. Not pay 2 win?

Uh sure, "We may be in Vegas, sure we have slots, black jack tables etc but no, no we are not a casino - most definitely not.."

If you can get everything you want/need to play for less than $15 a month, what does it matter if it is P2W? That's the sub rate for most MMOs out there and as anyone whose read the MWO FAQ can tell you, this is definitely an MMORPG (right down to player's owning pilot characters with skill development).

I've been exploring the different options of F2P. It seems everyone has a different opinion. A game with a limited free trial (see Lego Universe) is not F2P. I also do not like the games that diminish the game to persuade you in buying items to lessen the frustration. I also don't like when F2P become P2W where specific items or areas provide additional benefits to players. Some F2P games simply provide micro-transactions for cosmetic effects.

The one thing I'm always happy for is a game that is F2P, but provides an alternate way of obtaining the store currency (see LOTRO). I also enjoy games that provide an upfront payment without a subscription (see Guild Wars).

This begs the question: What type of F2P will Mechwarrior Online be? I just don't understand why people say no to F2P games as if there is no value or fun in playing them. Try playing a flash game online for an hour or two; I bet you will enjoy it.

I'm honestly not sure about this game. Fine it's Mechwarrior and that gets me interested and looking around, but everything I'm reading is that the developers were going to make it a fairly standard MW game; single player with online multiplayer.

At some point the money ran out and they're doing Mechwarriors usual online deathmatches without the expensive single player stuff and they've slapped the MMO sticker on it. They even describe lobbys and maps in an interview so yeah.

Now a Battletech MMO with Mechwarriror: Mercs combat driving the action I could seriously get behind, territorial conquest and all that good stuff. But I'm not totally sold on a solely PUG match based MW shooter, even if it is more 'sim' than 'shooter'.

F2P doesn't bother me either way. I have zero problems with a cash shop in a F2P MMO, I take exception at it being shoved at me whilst I'm subscribing.

So I'll keep watching for more information about this game but I'm most definitely on the fence and PI are going to have to sell it really well.
