As Star Wars: The Old Republic's launch date draws ever nearer, BioWare has announced that it is stepping up account security for the game. Any players whose accounts were created prior to October 21st will be required to change their passwords in order to conform to the new standards. Those standards, for the curious, dictate that the password must be between eight and 15 characters and must contain at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, and one number. For the full details, head on over to The Old Republic's official site.

All these password changes, I am running out of room on my house walls for Post-its.......

logically you should tape those post-its in each of their original game box, or put them all in the same. Believe me, you don't wan't one of those post-its to end up in a vacuum cleaner :) it happened to me once after I had been Inactive in wow for 2 years, and i didn't even remember the mail i used on it :D

I used to do this, just jot it down in the manual.
I don't really buy boxes anymore though.

What chaps my ass about this is the fact that my password already meets all those criteria and then some. Now I have to reset and make the appropriate changes to my password record. A waste of my time.

If only you could make up the five minutes it will take you to do that.
Damn Bioware.. taking five minutes from your life.

If your password meets the requirements already, just flip it. Simple trick for a password that isn't compromised but you're forced to change. I've had to do it for hotmail after my account got hijacked, I changed my password, then a day later MSN finally realized my account had been hijacked and made me change it again. Just flip it!

With all the hackers out there, Bio is just trying to avoid any missteps prior to launch. You know damn well that crazy hackers are probably attacking Bioware on a daily basis. It wouldn't surprise me if some got in far enough to make them concerned to send out this notice. The last thing they want before a major launch is to have their product hacked....

5 minutes can sometimes be a quarter of my gaming time, which changes the perspective a little bit.
Secondly, there are very few situations where taking another five minutes to redo something I've already done correctly is desired.
Tell you what, next time you're at an ATM, input your pin, get to your account info, then cancel eject your card and do it all again. Repeat for 5 minutes, just so the bank can be extra sure you keyed in those 4-8 numbers correctly.
You're right, the password change isn't the biggest deal. An irritation really. Thus I'm not claiming to drop my pre-order and burn effigies of the Docs.

Can I just get a fingerprint scanner for every site and game? I'm so sick of having numerous passwords for everything in my life.

That's actually a great idea. Hmmm....
Using a standard USB fingerprint scanner and having a website that interacts with numerous other sites with said data. Similar to Verisign or Intereac.

there exists 2 faar better options.
first is the eyeball scanner, and no it doesn't work as in movies where infiltrators cut out eyeballs to gain acces through a scanner. That reason is, that you are first allowed acces when an iris retracts.
the second option is to let your hand pass through a sort of vein recognition device, which first shines all your big and small veins with infrared light, and afterwards when the veins have absorbed the light, an x-ray recognition scan is taken. because no hand in the world is the same, not even on twins, since growth and scarring are unique to each person.
And yes, the second is my favorite :)

We could also look at DNA testing through blood samples, but then again, you can get a fingerprint scanner for what 20-40 bucks?
There's plenty of alternatives that are far more secure, accesibility would have to be a major concern if you were say, going to start a business that offered this service for online identification.

If they really want up to step up the security, why don't they tell us how people who don't get TOR's Collector's Edition will be able to get the security authenticator token that comes with the CE? I want one for account security(after hearing about its success in WoW), but currently the only mention of it on the official site is in the CE. I'd like to pre-order one to come with my regular edition, or at least to arrive at my house soon after launch.
Please BioWare?

I was kind of hoping that they would offer a Custom Security Authentication Key usb device, like the one that comes with the collector's edition, for sale before launch or perhaps shortly after. It would love to just slot in a USB authenticator and then just play.

I swear to God my bank account has less strict password requirements.
http://xkcd.com/936/
I would rather rely on really long words that only make sense to me than have to remember which letters I replaced with numbers or capitalized randomly. I've actually been using a password I got from Ogame's default random password generator years ago (the only one I've ever found easy to memorize, although I'm not even sure why) and it wouldn't satisfy this requirement because it doesn't have a capital letter. =\

I use an app on my iphone called Mykeepass. It's basically just a password protected database that holds all your passwords for you. Iliminates the need to memorize more than one password at least.
It's 0.99 cents on the iphone, or you can DL it for free I think for the PC (If you have both you can sync them). I chose the phone so I'd always have it with me, and between my phone lock, and the ability to wipe all data remotely should it ever go missing I'm fairly comfortable with the security of it. Might not want to trhow your SIN or banking info on it but for things like video games it's a must have.

Way to use a screenshot from 2009 that's really outdated. There's tons of new ones on the site when you just click "screenshots." >.

uhm requesting people change their passwords more often does NOT give the same security as an authenticator as we have ALL seen time and time again that hacked game login servers were the cause of mass account losses over and over again. They are putting a flimsy bandaid on something that needs stitches.
