AC was my first MMO, played it for years, and always went back to it after quitting games like AC2, FFXII, SWG, and WoW. My online handle eventually even evolved into the name of my favorite AC server... I love hearing from all the former AC players who recognize my name in game.

I admire the dedication of the folks who've stuck with it all this time, and though I don't think I'll ever be an active player again, I'll always have the fond memories of my time in Dereth :)

Like all first loves, it has a special significance for those for whom it was their first MMO. For others it was a rather over-rated game, hence it being the least successful of the three games that launched that generation of MMOs, the others of course being UO and EQ.

It has certainly lasted the course, but for some years with a purely nominal playerbase, and if the forums are to be believed a fair number of those who still pay a subscription don't actually play the game any more. Shame, it was a reasonably decent game in my view, but the bigger shame of course was that AC2 was such a lukewarm and short-lived successor.

@Seffrid

No, they don't have a lot of sleeper subs.

They've added a ton to the game over the last couple of years. Certainly worth checking out again if you haven't been back for a while. Do the free trial hop in and relive the good old days.

It wasn't my first MMO, and definitely wasn't my first video game. But it still holds a special place in my heart because it has been the BEST. And I've played most major released MMOs to date (and some F2Ps, and some chinese and korean ones). The only other one that I like on parr with AC is Guild Wars, for completely different reasons.

AC was the least successful, if you define success in terms of subscriber numbers, because it was a bunch of business newbs who partnered with microsoft, had never released a game before, and worked out of some guys basement. Yes. Really. It could have released before EQ and therefore greatly expanded it's playerbase if they'd been more experienced.

But that's what it was about, right? Something NEW. Something that hadn't been done before. The groundwork for every single MMO that you've played since was laid by Meridian 59, UO, EQ, and AC, and the myriad others that never saw the same publicity as those guys did.

AC is the best for more than just nostalgic reasons, and I'll say that until the day they close us down.

First MMO I ever played, and that video brought back a lot of memories.

Ahh launch day memories, still remember going out and buying it on a rainy day after waiting patiently once the open beta ended. Had to wait to really play it until the next morning before heading off to a class. Funniest thing about this, I was cleaning a old pile of magazines yesterday night and came across some computer gaming magazine, not CGW one of the other littler rags at the time, with a preview article of AC in it.
I quit back when SWG launched and considered going back from time to time to kick the tires on it again just for laughs. But looks like the login conversion from MS Zone-Passport-Live never carried the account over so not going back to a fresh shiny level 1 just to see it again. But if I could go back I would and that says alot about the game considering all the other mmo trash I've wasted time in since then that I can't even remember stuff from. Yet I can still recall sitting outside of Qualabar camping the mud golems to get cheap xp, then heading into the little Lugian outpost and crapping my pants getting cornered in there the first time. Ah the memories...

@Amusednow If you're interested in coming back with your old account, I highly recommend going through the account recovery process. It's pretty simple but can take a couple of weeks. I recovered my first account which was made the day of release and only played for a couple of years, tops.

This should help you out: http://support.turbine.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=24001

Of course, you can always pop in for the 2 week free trial just to relive memories :) Do it after Nov 8th though. They're adding new "Welcome to Dereth" starter quests.

Apropos to nothing maybe; but I will really be glad when more people of my generation start reporting on gaming blogs…..it’s tiresome to keep hearing all of these old Hipsters wail on about how George Lucas raped their childhood to the point of having to include it in everything.

@Dunraven What is your generation exactly? I'm 24 and still think George Lucas raped a lot of things. I started gaming when I was 10 so I played all of the oldies and think they are better than all of the new cookie cutter trash that comes out.
