MMOs are great for escaping the real world on occasion, particularly if you're stuck working for the man. EverQuest II's new Age of Discovery expansion is turning those tables by introducing new tradeskill apprentices that will allow players throughout Norrath to become the man.
The new mechanics look to give you the opportunity to get more done when it comes to EQII's sprawling tradeskill game (to say nothing of the fact that you'll be able to cackle some variation on the phrase "my young apprentice" in your best Emperor Palpatine voice). Apprentices can discover nearly 100 unique recipes and they can also be customized in terms of name and appearance. Initially you'll be restricted to Coldain dwarves, but Sony Online Entertainment plans to make more races available in the future. Head to the official EQII website for all the details.

I love to see MMO's adapting from each other's features. An ever evolving game genre should benefit from this streamlining. People who dismiss it as ripping each other off just seem more concerned with "seeing" the truth in a world they believe is blinded by consumerism. How special for them.
Meanwhile, games get better. I've never played EQ2, but I like to see MMO's evolving.

* Note : Lightsabers not included as per LucasArts agreement. But SOE may plan to give your apprentice glow-sticks or sparklers of various colors.

Age of Discovery is being released before TOR - so who is copying who?

This feature will be awesome ONLY if it lets you queue these apprentices up to do your rush orders so you don't have to waste hours of your life just grinding rush orders in order to level up. Seriously, the worst crafting grind I have ever seen is in EQ2.
