Now here's something that's long overdue.

Lineage 2 is a great game and hopefully this will reinvigorate it a bit. I for one will certainly give it a try as soon as it turns F2P.

You can shellac a turd, but it's still a turd.

Sorry, but F2P or P2P, it's still your typical Korean grindfest.

No thanks.

@Oyjord

Apparently they've made a number of improvements to reduce the grind a bit. I know I'm going to give it another shot (played it for a bit years ago). No reason not to seeing as they have a legit f2p model (no gated content ect.)

I have so many F2P options now I don't know if I am interested in this one or not. I guess it will depend on how much is actually free as I don't immediately have the urge to still spend cash on this one like I have for some others.

This is GREAT news. L2 will get a huge population boost from this with all the private server players rushing into globals.

Although the game is old, I will definitely give it a shot as I am a huge fan of NCSofts other titles(City of Heroes, Guild Wars, Aion)

From what they promise, the f2p model seem like one of the best on the market compare to other mmo. Too bad i'm not playing it :P

It does look like it is only extras that you buy in the store and all content is actually free. So kudos to them for that. Well I'll have to at least give it a try now. There has to be something to set them apart though, free or not.

I'd love to try this game...if...it didn't use GameGuard.

Why L2Team why?! Why use that program?! >_<

@ElfLove because it prevents a lot of botting and cheating(even though it doesn't eradicate them, it makes it harder). And besides, you don't even know it's there, it just launches with the game, if it really uses gameguard.

@Fingerrr gameguard does cause errors sometimes but i don't really understand what the big dead is, it's not like it stops you from running multiple clients or get's in the way of normal gameplay (aside from the occasional login error). I have had years of adrenaline fueled PvP action, and the server politics and yes even the drama are like no other game i've played (and i've played all the big ones and a ton of f2p games).

Yes, the game was a major grind fest and despite getting easier, it will still be a Korean grinder at heart, but for anyone looking to finally give this game a shot, go for it.

Once you get hooked you will not be sorry, but L2 is not for the weak so emos, and people that need their hand held 100% may not last long.

NCSoft is going down faster than the Titanic at the moment. GW2 can't come fast enough. A pity it is not even in Alpha stage....

remember the Aion "WoW killer" in the East lies about 4.7 million players.

Of course they were never there with 75%¨of NC soft income coming from ONE country: South Korea.

I salute all westerners that fell for the hype.

What has this to do with Lineage 2? Well it TOO had a so called 5 million player base back in the days remember. Of course it never happened.

But the freigthening thing is ... that Lineage has twice the user size as Aion in the latest reports of NCSoft (2nd Q of 2011).

So another one bites the dust in a series of going to free to play offers to squeeze the last cents out of the last fans.

L2 is still a game with the best party-oriented PvP mechanics, and I do not see any candidates for this role in the near future. Transition to F2P is a reasonable step, for example, Russian servers (F2P) have a greater profit than EU+NA(subscription).

@(Unverified) It's a reasonable choice. Lineage II has for a very long time had a core sub base here in the US but it's never been huge.. as of right now there's only one server open here in the west and one for Eu. With this new free to play option they'll be adding new servers and a whole new generation of players will have the chance to experience the game. Also from what I've read it's actually one of the most "free" f2ps out there.

Don't bother, this guy is a rabid WoW fanboy frequently spreading lies and misinformation about NCSoft products because next to Nexon they happen to be the biggest competition of Blizzard on the MMORPG market and dwarf WoW in the Eastern market.
Hes an (accidentally) admitted Blizzard shareholder planting negative feedback and misinformation about any competitive product with an endless series of sockpuppets(multiple fake accounts).

-Aion was never advertised nor implied to be a WoW killer in first place
yet it demolished WoW on the Korean market, competes with it equally on Taiwans market and has more Japanese player than WoW where no one even cares about WoW.

-NC never "lied" about 4.7 Million Aion player, they never claimed that in first place, nor is there any information that would even disprove it even if they claimed it. Remember Aion alone makes half as much money in Asia, as ALL Blizzard products (WoW+SC2+SC1+WC3 ) in Asia combined with its +6 Million subscriber and proclaimed claimed millions of boxsales.

-Aion generating a large chunk of revenue today from Korea doesn't contradict any global numbers within the millions or makes the foreign revenues bad. It just makes Korean revenues good. A mere percentage of an total number he of course doesnt want to tell (because shouting Aion is making "just tenmillions" on the Western market, but Korea even more! doesn't sound bad). Hes just throwing that to pretend there is factual proof that Aion is somehow doing bad everywhere else than Korea.

-NC Soft never claimed they have 5 million active players. They explicitly always refer to them as "sold units(as in boxes)" or "total attracted player since launch of the game" in PR statements and in ads.

- The claim that L2's "playerbase" would be twice as large as Aions is complete made up bullshit and not mentioned at all in the last Q2 2011 report. Hes just lying. And Lineages 2 massive revenue growth due to their new cashshop campaign doesnt make Aion bad but only L2 massively successful.

Basically every single point, from NCSoft going dowhill "fast" (they are not going down at all) down to playernumbers of L2 and Aion is complete made up bull**** or intentional misleading selective quoting and not actually proving his claims in context.
