@SnarlingWolf And Games Workshop ripped off Tolkien, which ripped off Celtic myths, which ripped off Roman myths, which ripped off Greek myths.

Could you please give me your list of Top 10 original games?

@epilepticemu

Instead of going out of my way to actually pick out the most original video games in history, which there certainly are plenty, I made a list of games that left a long standing impression on me and that I continued to think back on even a decade or two later.

Ultima Online (some of the Ultimas were great too)

Asheron's Call

Dark Age of Camelot (the last time I thought an MMO that was released was actually worth the cost)

Doom (and Wolfenstein for getting it started)

Mechwarrior series

Civilization

X-com (There were a lot of turn based squad control combat games back then, but this is the one I always remember back to)

Command & Conquer (original Dune RTS for getting things going. Series crapped out when Westwood Studios was bought out)

Half-Life (for extending the genre and for bringing us the mod Counter Strike which is still one of the most played games today. It's a shame the ADD people today need constant respawns so we can't have more strategic round based play.)

Battlefield series, stopping at BF2 and definetly not including the new BF3.

Original Gauntlet

Powerpad Nintendo games (for bringing us interactivity which was a blast and yet not seriously revisited by any company until the Wii)

@TheAngryIntern

learn your history.

Type Chainmail into the Wikipedia. Chainmail was made ... 10 years before Warhammer minis rules .... and a miniature game within Dungeons and Dragons. I know I played it back then !

Then read interviews where Morhaime said they were players of Dungeons and Dragons and its gaming systems.

Then you'l realise you fell for the lies and hype from EA/Mythic and their "contract" with Games Workshop back 4 or 5 years ago.

You see that is EA: you lie until everyone actually starts to believe you.

@Snarling Wolf.

WOW made more than 7 billion dollars in its 7 years existence. No other single game, not even a motion picture, came close (Avatar under $ 2B).

Of course you can discuss quality, but you can't discuss success in revenue.

You are simly put a Blzzard hater. That's your right of course.

And somehwere along your lines you ARE right of course, because Blizzard destroyed any gaming branche in which they set foot in (by sheer number of players and ... money). So everyone tries but with a terrible result.

Be that RTS, RPG Hack@Slash and now MMORPG.

But you may decide if this "destruction" is due to Blizzard and the huge success they earn in their games or due to the awful "competition" that simply fall flat ... in the LONG run.

If I compare for example the long life of a SC1, a Warcraft 3 with the "competition" I don't think there is even a discussion.

SC2 more than 16 months after its launch is in a surge as an esport everywhere. Most games are dead after 6 months launch without any updates.

Think about the successes and explain them.

Gameplay first.

And Avatar was a craptastic movie.

You are a person that loves things because other people love them, nothing more than that. You can call me a hater all you want, but in actuality I just have my own taste and don't have to follow the herd.

Anytime you create something that targets the widest most general audience ever (lowest common denominator) it will make the most money. It will also be the most unoriginal and unintersting piece of work. It happens with games, it happens with books, it happens with movies.

Why is it that the movie that wins the oscar for Best Movie each year is almost never the movie which made the most money? Because people who want a nice interesting different story vote for just that where as the masses go to the most mindless and easy to digest unoriginal thing they can find since it is easy and familiar.

It is the way it has worked for a long time. Sales/subscribers does not equal quality and originality. It does, in fact, almost always mean the opposite.

Those who innovate don't get rich, those who steal innovation do. Angry Birds, a complete and utter rip off of games that had been around the net for a long time. Those other games? They made essentially nothing. Angry Birds? It made a fortune. The same happened with WoW. To not be able to see or admit that means you are blinded by your undying love of Blizzard and makes you worse than a hater.

@SnarlingWolf It must be hard being so cynical. I bet you think you're intellectually superior just because you don't like the things everyone else does. In reality you just have already worn out on life, on being human and enjoying what the rest of us do.

Most people enter the stage you're in in their late 70's or 80's, where the world becomes a despicable place to live and nothing is good anymore. It's too damn bad you already reached that point. I can't even fathom having that viewpoint as I think I'd sink to a place where I could barely function.

Turn it around before you get any more cynical. Life isn't worth living when you have that viewpoint of everything around you. Not everything sucks, people aren't "sheep" for collectively agreeing something is great, and realize that you are possibly the one who is wrong. You're not some brilliant person who sees through the fog of shit to see things as they truly are while everyone else squanders in shit.
