@(Unverified) Kelethin all the way. The music. The darkness (back when MMOs were actually dark and spooky). The first person only (or near 3rd person) perspective of navigating those rope ladders. All of that made it feel "real".

I really feel that darkness and first person only make games sooooo much more immersive. If only we could have those mechanics with a modern implementation. Currently the only MMO that does it is Darkfall and anyone who's played knows what it's like when you think someone's following you, having to spin around with your head on a swivel, it gets creepy. Too bad the game itself sucks.

@Nucleon Depends on what iconic means really. If it's most memorable, Kelthin, hands down. If it is the city to end all cities, the city that is always "home" it's probably Stormwind. WoW was always centered around the two main capitals, and I think Stormwind was much more memorable than the Horde's variant.

+1 for Neriak. I haven't played in 8 or 9 years, and I can still mentally run from The Maiden's Fancy in 3rd Gate to The Blind Fish in Commons to Slug's in Foreign Quarter.
....Why, yes, my friends and I had max Alcohol Tolerance, why do you ask?

Plenty of other games had memorable cities. I can still map out parts of DAoC's Jordheim and Tir na Nog, WoW's Undercity, Orgrimmar and Ironforge, and on and on, but it's Neriak that continues to live on in blocky, pixelated 3D in my mind.

agreed Tottaly Juno for me as well. Everythign from Gardens, to the Upper 'bazaar' which used to be just outside the gates, but now takes place in the actual zone, to the 'hangout' spot that is lower jeuno AH(at least for me and mine) to the tunnel that takes you to Qufim.... out of all the MMOs i've played no city has felt more grand especially when I finally got there for the first time (with all the fear that the first trip took when traveling from sandy.

Mine was Thunder Bluff. My first MMO character ever was a Tauren warrior and that was my first capital city. None of the other MMO cities have impressed me as much. TOR looks to have some impressive cities that may edge out that nostalgia for me though. And what I've seen of GW2 cities is top notch as well.

@hereafter

I agree with you. I always had my hearthstone bound to Thunderbluff because it was less busy than Lagrimmar.

Kelethin in EQ1, so many deaths :(

Ironforge is more memorable for me than Stormwind from WoW too.

@bobfish I was thinking the same thing. Before "old world flying" I couldn't figure out Stormwind at all. Ironforge is iconic though.

@bobfish Aye Kelethin for me as well, love playing my Wood Elf Bard. I remember at higher levels I would jump down in front of new players who after seeing me survive and decided it was safe to follow. Ah how the bodies pilled up, I miss EQ. ^_^

Freeport from EQ would be the choice of many old-timers, I'd expect. For me... hard to say, because my early MMO experience was scattered across a bunch of different titles. Maybe AoC's Tortage.

@Ardwulf I was going to say Freemarch as well. Playing EQ with the updated graphics, I couldn't even find my way around now. But back in the day...
