At first I was excited.

Then I noticed that it would be pay to win.

Oh well, another game that won't be worth playing.

I know what would be a great Cash Shop item.

Intimidating Paint Job

The mercs had 'I May Die, But I'm Taking You With Me' painted on all their 'Mechs!

Mektek has an interview with one of the devs that tries to calm some of the fears.

http://www.mektek.net/

I'm going to try it regardless. There are tons of F2P games that are excellent. The folks that complain about World of Tanks just aren't very good at it or hate that there is a grind. I've gotten fairly high up without paying a dime in that game and if you are good it doesn't matter if you pay for gold shells or anything.

If skill can beat out cash then the game is great.

I love Battletech, but I hate the Clan era. Kurita is the real enemy!

Also, it begs the question: Will Inner Sphere players be gimped by inferior tech? How will that balance? If not, doesn't that kind of break with the lore?

I guess a year is a long time to answer a lot of questions.

@KDolo

According to what is on the site we have a little bit before the clan shows up and no indication that players can be clan (though I don't know why they wouldn't).

I am hoping that we can at least salvage clan gear to put on IS mechs.

@KDolo Why would that break with the lore? Clan advanced genetics, training, and tech were canonically shown to be the reason why a few thousand warriors could subjugate billions and defeat entrenched enemies with superior numbers.

Personally I'm all about the higher tech. Current zombie mech technology would slaughter any flashbulb, same thing for slashing strike mechs etc. I'm all about the actual diversification of the mechs even within weight class.

From the http://www.mektek.net/ interview:

Let’s talk about what MechWarrior Online is going to be. The first question on my mind as I read this press release is that, honestly, when I think MechWarrior, I’m thinking of, well, MechWarrior 2 through MechWarrior 4. Is MWO in that vein?

Creative Director Bryan Ekman: Yeah, absolutely. From a gameplay point of view, it’s the online component of those games. It’s match-based gameplay. So you go in, you fight, and you come out. So in that sense, it’s absolutely true to the heritage. The way you control the Mech, and the way the Mech works, and the options available to you during gameplay are inspired by Mech 2 through 4. Anybody who has played those games will feel right at home playing MWO.

Sounds more like a lobby based game than an mmo to me. Between than and it being F2P I'm feeling disappointed already.

@meanieme

What did you expect? to walk around in your mech WoW/Rift/SWTOR style looking for creeps to kill for your quest?

@Oskiee - I would have no problem with it being lobby based matchmaking, as long as the mmo component of gameplay harkens back to MPBT on GEnie/Kesmai....

That would be the snozzberries my friends...

@Thojorkill

Exactly. Plus the ability to move units, invade planets and affect the InnerSphere like we used to on MPBT. Wonder if ICE is still alive, bet he'd be pretty hyped to call forth the TBC once again.

This has a lot of potential and a huge fan base. I suggest not screwing this one up. In the mean time I look forward to playing Hawken! Which I have to admit seems to look a little less cheesy and maybe a little more fun than the Mechwarrior 5 coming out, but I may be wrong, I haven't seen enough to make that judgement on Mechwarrior 5, it just seems a little slow paced and the voice acting was just as cheesy as ever. Hawken looks Damn amazing. Check it out if you haven't already.

There is a good game featuring robots out there. Called Perpetuum. How can a game's IP be more important than game mechanics ? Well, I say, good luck.

Is it just me or does anyone else inwardly groan every time a random developer announces an MMO based in a game world you hold dear?

Like Mechwarrior. I actually played that stuff back when it was all cardboard.
So many devs are announcing new MMO these days and only a small handful of those will be around a year after they launch. So frequently MMOs do badly and don't get anywhere near as successful as WoW (what they hoped for), then fall flat on their faces and shut down the servers.
I almost wish they wouldn't bother..almost.

because if players can choose between Inner Sphere and Clan as factions, and if they're balanced, then Clan tech won't be superior to IS tech.

@KDolo Maybe. Though it seems you are a tabletop gamer and as such there should be an obvious solution to Clan players having access to better tech.

To spell it out, Clan players could be restricted to less mass/fewer Mechs to capture or defend their objectives. That would in fact be MORE fitting the lore. They could even balance higher ranked players against lower the same way.
