I'm glad that he's still confident, but "redundant content" doesn't make much sense...I wonder what they are actually cutting?

@Wild Colors Just your typical PR spin saying they are removing things "we" probably wouldn't care about. So pretty much in our eyes important things that take away from the game.

It's a MMO, it's literally built on redundancy. So looking at it from a positive perspective, probably removed a couple of "Go there and kill X" quests or probably removing a cookie cutter dungeon or two, or maybe if everyone is lucky some of the more grindy parts.

Is his name Michael or Chris? You say one thing in the headline and another in the article.

The linked source says Chris.

*cough* Might want to check over the name you gave him in the title.

I pretty much figured this, which is why I haven't gone into panic mode. I will continue with my cautious optimism becoming more cautious.

I'm still playing End Of All Hope by Nightwish when I think of online WoD now.

I'm going to assume 'redundant content' is something like multiple starting areas?

@Nef

I am thinking along those lines, too. Or maybe models they re-use again or something.

But it does not make too much sense; the only other thing, if we go the exact opposite, is totally new content, which, I would think, would be even MORE expensive to make.

So, either there is going to be less content in certain areas and we will wind up with a skimpier game or something else I can only guess at that won't hurt the game. But if you have less workers to do the work...seems like a worse situation to be in, IMO.

Redundant content is usually cheaper to make ... because it's based on stuff/frameworks that already exist and have been tested. So this makes no sense at all.

@mfresen

I think he means content that serves a similar purpose to other content, ie. the stuff that means avoiding what you're talking about. It's redundancy in the development process that's being cut, which will actually LEAD to redundancy in terms of content being reused in different place.

By calm, he means spin. I love how PR jack monkeys think, if they say something they can make it true.

redundant content by the way means copy and paste. It's what lazy developers do in mass.

They all do it to a degree that's true, it's when the player really notices how much. FFXIV had huge amounts of the landscape copied and pasted, makes the world very trapping. Same problem with NPCs - mobs, killing the same boar (though it's a different color) gets old fast. The fact their actually admitting to this.... well that a whole new level of stupid.

"The game is only going to be slightly delayed, because we're going to start doing a lazier job getting it finished, you should give us your money though anyways..."

Lazy developers need to get kicked in the balls. We don't want the same old crap in a quickly made different suit, we want the bigger, better, and more next stage in MMOs.

We don't know that it's being cut permanently, only that it's cut for now. Seems like they're concentrating on fundamentals right now, which is where they should be focused anyway. Once that's done and DUST is out and making money, they most likely plan to crank things back up and go into full production mode, including working on all that redundant content. In that case, what this announcement amounts to is saying they're going through a bottleneck phase.

Didn't Mythic say something similar about the 4 racial capitols that were cut from the game pre release with the promise they'd be added "later(tm)"
well its been what 3 years now and no new racial capitols......

@Skyydragonn

Supposing that something which happened in a vaguely similar circumstance with a different company might happen again here is certainly a good idea. Imagining that it's inevitable is just as unrealistic and foolish as rejecting it out of hand.

Not saying you're doing the latter, just making a point. ;)

The fact that they are reportedly "slowing production" on WoD cracks me up. We all know MMOs take time, but they've been talking about this game for almost 5 years now, and it's still in pre-production. If they get much slower, they'll be in reverse.
