Well folks, we'd love to tell you the official date that DC Universe Online is switching to its freemium business model. The only problem is that Sony Online Entertainment isn't making that information available until tomorrow.
Why this post, then?
So you can mark your Bat-calendars of course! SOE will make the date official at 7:30 p.m. EDT on October 27th via its Stickam portal (so, yes, this is effectively an announcement about an announcement). As we reported last month, SOE will be moving DCUO to a tiered access plan and eliminating the barrier that is the monthly subscription fee -- although gamers who choose to continue paying it in the form of the Legendary plan will enjoy numerous perks including free DLC and lots of character slots.

The whole lack of info and this announcement kind of make it seem like they haven't met their deadline and F2P won't be launching by the end of october.

Err...not November yet. The code is there(people were accidently flagged as F2P), the new store items are there. Its just not free yet.
As far as what's in the store...its about 100 cosmetic items(most overpriced) and repair robots. And all the cosmetic items are re-skins of items in the game. 1 DLC pack(Green Lantern). Seems a good deal for a free player.

@Protoavis Announcing that it would go F2P "at the end of October" made it seem like they weren't going to be launching by the end of October. I love DCUO, but it is terrible at meeting deadlines.
See also, monthly content updates. Oh wait, you have to log into RIFT to see that.

This is par for the course for this dev team. There are many bugs since release that *still* have not been fixed. The social interfaces are still a mess and make it hard to promote any form of community.
DCUO is a nice distraction for some light gaming. Its a great thematic game and the voice work is quite solid. Unfortunately, once you hit level cap of 30, it gets old quickly as there is not much left to do...
If they added more power sets, costume options and some additional content around the F2P event it might be enough to spark some interest.

Also with the f2p happening less than a year after release how long does everyone think this game is going to be around?
With MUO developing in a way I find non-appealing (even if I think it's the better IP) I'm questioning if lifetime would even be worth it.....

I think DCUO will be around for at least two more years. I'm betting they have a contract with DC that says if they shut the game down early, they owe them a bazillion dollars for "harm" to the IP or something.
There isn't anyway it's shutting down and probably the main reason they are going FTP because the pay model can't last two years.
FTP is easier because they can sell a few subs but mostly, sell costumes which is what most people in DCUO want anyways.
You don't have to worry about a DCU shutdown anytime soon.

I just started playing Vindictus recently, and since everyone says DCUO has such a large beat-em-up element, can anyone comment on how similar the fights are between the two?

@pcgneurotic
Very similar rapidly pressing the left mouse button will do your normal combo but if do mousepressx3 then hold it it will do a special attack.
there are lots of combo's like that. you do have a skill bar also with all your supervillian/hero skills like fireballs etc.

@pcgneurotic Theyre just both action games with that hack and slash feel although i would say Vindictus has a more hack and slash feel while DCUO has more of a brawler feel. Theyre not that much different but different enough. DCUO has more button combos requires and basically just offers more unnecessary abilities (more to play with) and it has an actual open world to explore.
I was subscribed for a few months when the game first came out, i love the crap out of it. I stopped playing it because i personally blasted through all the content too fast every day.
Great freakin game tho, loads of fun.
I will definitely be playing the F2P version. =)

I will be announcing what I intend to announce tomorrow. The announcement date for announcing when what I'm announcing will transpire will be announced shortly thereafter. First we have to have a meeting to decide when the meeting will be. The meeting announcement announcement will coincide with the second announcement. If you're confused, stay tuned, there will be an announcement for when an announcement addressing your confusion will be released as well.
Oh, by the by - all announcements can be read on our cheesy new attempt to catch up in the social networking arena community site. Our old one sucked and was just filled with people mad about the crap we killed off anyways. Sorry we didn't announce that one, but by releasing our community site inside an announcement that only new players would care about, we'll keep it secret from the old players that we don't like anymore. We're sneaky like that.

Nothing dumber in gaming than an announcement for an announcement.
