If you finish the questline, you get a ton of gil at the end. You should finish that.

It also is the best part of being a noob there as well because of the storyline.

I know it's not strictly for entertainment but this installment of CMA started off bland. It was more of you telling us what happened in a succinct manner than going further to give your impressions. Whether that's due to how you write such an article or it being a reflection of how much fun you're having, it came off as boring to read. You've tread this starter stuff before but maybe you could compare how the game is now to what it has been before.

That said, delve into crafting next time for more coverage of the gameplay. I voted for botany and alchemy (you can't vote twice on the second poll, boo!). I found crafting to be engaging with the risk versus reward system put in place. The way it's presented isn't very newbie friendly but I found myself learning through trial and error which is nice to not have a mechanic be spoiled for the player right away.

Such a nice looking game ... I keep half-way wanting to try it ... then I read a few sentences about the actual game and I immediately suffer an exponential increase in apprehension ...

@Mikkhail It's gotten hugely improved lately, it's worth the tiny box price, even if it's going to subs in a month or so.

Probably not going to get me to play it, but I am curious and will be following your adventures. Living vicariously, as it were.

I tried the game last week. I am usually able to play the most troublesome MMO's with huge open-mindedness(IE, played MO for 6 months, Wurm for sometime, started with original EQ in 1999). Combat is horrible with a keyboard. Its not that combat is hard due to mob difficulty, its that combat was made with a gamepad in mind and not a keyboard. Combat felt very turn based even though its real-time. The UI was bad but I know they are redoing that.

This has to go down as one of my more unfavorible impressions of a game I tried. No Im not a troll. I seriously just ordered this game and played for about 2 nights (2 play sessions). If they revamped combat completely I probably would give it another try, but I dont hear that that is in the works.

The "delete" key (not backspace) will remove a keybind by the way. I'm not sure it's mentioned anywhere, but I eventually came across that.

I'd stick with the story even though it's something I'm familiar with, it's definitely the most Final Fantasy-esque part of the game.

The game is currently free-to-play outside of initial purchase, though subscription is coming back in Dec. after the 1.20 patch

Matt just PLEASE make sure too let us know when/if you feel like you run out of things too do without having to look too hard yourself! Even with the retarded controls THAT was the main reason I quit!

The UI is in a bad state and they are working on it, thank God! And as Hipster said the game was made with a game pad in mind not a keyboard/mouse setup. This is due to the fact that they where aiming for a simultaneous launch on the PS3 and PC, the PC happened and we now know that the PS3 will take 2 years from PC launch. So next October-December will be when you eventually see it (Beta during that period).

@Unverified

As far as Matt comparing it to how it was before, how is he suppose to do that if this is his first sojourn into the game? At least I think that's what I read in his previous article. As most will tell you that are playing it and played it since launch. The game in itself is 100 times better now then when it launched. Not to say that the game is great just that it's better, and they are working to make it even better. With the next two patches we should see a good improvement of the game since they are introducing some things that people have been raging about for a while.

@Magnux

He played at launch. I'm not asking him to compare everything, just the starter experience at least so that we can understand how it has improved in that regard.

"Oh, Final Fantasy XIV. I bought this one on launch day and found myself sorely disappointed." - Matt: http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/12/choose-my-adventure-what-is-this-i-dont-even/

I STRONGLY urge you to try playing this game with a gamepad, it makes a HUGE difference as the game is designed to be played as such, which is why you notice that none of the players playing on gamepads ever bitch about the UI that much, if at all. Again just plug ur PS3 controller in if you don't have an actual gamepad (that's what I use, w/ the help of motionjoy drivers), it will make the game feel more like a final fantasy and a lot more as what it was intended to be.

Do the storyline because I truly want to see what you do in the inbetween levels where there is no story to follow. That's where I usually get and where I get bored with the game. As I lose sense of purpose. Mindlessly grinding mobs is, to me, archaic and needs to be done away with in modern MMOs.

Ummmm.... does ANYONE (including Massively work-at-home bloggers) know if FF14 will EVER come out with a 7 or 14-day FREE TRIAL???

SInce launch, the game could have had MILLIONS of players or at least, hundreds of thousands TRY the game and decide for themselves if the game needed changes.

Now is the perfect time!

Lets hope one comes out so the majority of us non-FF fanboys(and girls) can see what FF14 is all about and not rely on the opinions of jaded and spoiled FF addicts lol

Yes, that was a year ago. Things change and data becomes outdated when you don't keep it fresh. Rotten data leads to rotten reviews. Not to say the game hasn't left what can be considered a beta state yet but it's made admirable progress from where it was a year ago.

Anyone who voted crafting is sadistic.

A lot of things have improved since launch, but crafting ain't one of them - and it was the worst of them all even before.

Story missions are at levels 1, 10, 20, 30, 36, 42, and 46, if memory serves, so you'll be doing a lot of combat/grinding even if Story wins out.
