Funcom's The Secret World may be about underworld societies waging a "behind the curtains" war against forces of darkness, but the beta signup is anything but secret. Over 500,000 potential testers have signed up on the MMO's website since Funcom opened beta registrations a month ago.
Funcom CEO Trond Arne Aas says this is bigger than anything the studio has seen to date: "We are thrilled to see the amount of interest The Secret World is generating among gamers and the press, and exceeding half a million beta registrations six months before release is definitely something we are proud of. The gamer interest in The Secret World and the community size for the game is even greater than we experienced with Age of Conan at the same stage of development. We expect the community size to keep on expanding at an ever faster pace in the coming months as we approach open beta and launch."
The Secret World is scheduled to launch April 2012 and will be subscription-based with optional microtransactions on top of that.

I hope this means they are also planning to keep the closed beta running for as long as possible with as many testers as possible to ensure a smoother launch than AoC.

Oh, I see what he's saying, since I had to read it.
Well...good!
I think the reason people are interested at this early period of time is both the pre-advertising that's been done for YEARS in viral ways AND the modern/horror setting, which is different from your current standard MMORPG fare of fantasy and even Sci-Fi.

And the 3 faction PvP is probably another draw, since we don't see much of that anymore coming out of online MMOs.

Yep. The three faction PvP will definitely at least draw PvP players to look around since there is a void of good PvP games out now.
The skill progression is probably going to be the biggest draw imo, because it's not the typical WoW type skillset. Being able to have one character but one that can do EVERYTHING is actually a one-up on Rift in a way.
In Rift you can have some characters do some things, but not all can do everything due to the souls. With TSW, you slot skills in and out so your character is that much more effective.
Considering the skill list is over 500 so far, that's pretty intense.

Funcom REALLY needs a smooth launch - Anarchy Online and Conan sure didnt win any awards for smooth launches. They NEED to learn to postpone if not ready.

The major difference here is and why i'm hopefull, the game director both in charge for Funcom previous mmo failure launches has left not only the company but the entire game industry.
The current Game director while coming up first as the writer of Anarchy Onlines story and later to be know for the longest journey and dreamfall has been pointed out.
They also repeatedly said mistakes were made and since exit Gaute (previous Game director) the company has been more open even ot the point acknowledging the first major AO expansion being badly coded and even worse documented. On AoC they had to say that the polish will be more evenly spread and games like Rift set the standard for a quality launch.
Despite their good words as that's all subjective things people will either believe or not. The engine being used is the same as in AoC, what means the errors are out (not speaking of the combat system in AoC) the engine has gone thru extensive QA.
The game also looks a lot more stable: no hick ups, visual glitches (what can indicate memory leaks) then AoC did back at that stage of development. Plenty of official and unofficial sources that are positive.
So while i have a positive outlook on this game, i still remain skeptical till player reviews and a personal hands on.

Really shameful that they go with greedy double dipping business model with TSW.
Especially that Funcom said that they will gradually expand cash shop, that they made some nice data from AoC cash shop and that they want to collect 35% of revenue from cash shop. All in P2P game.
Seriously...cash shop will be packed with lots of stuff :/
Gonna skip TSW cause of that.
Kinda have strict principles considering that.

Don't forget to mention that there won't be any Buy2win items, simply cosmetic and convenience items. What has recently again been confirmed seeing some get their panties in a bunch over this.
The shop will also feature large content packs that will be available instead of expansions.
I see no harm in this, nor any conspiracy it's all optional. If you played AoC or AO you would've actually noticed that you're simply being a dramaqueen as neither of those shops are easly visible, compared to lotr or offer game breaking items.
I can even understand why people that work full time - would want the option to have something as teleports or experience potions. Once you end up working 12 hours a day, you'll also know why.

Yeah cashshop kill a majority of my interest is this game as well. Its like working at a bank and sitting by stacks of hundred dollar bills yet stating that there is and will be zero temptation aka pay 2 win buy out options.
I am glad though we have three major titles coming out that gives us a nice cafeteria option.

You know everything don't you?
I've played AoC and cash shop is awful.
Actually for me any cash shop is awful.
For selling content packs you don't need in-game cash shop filled with other stuff as well.
They will MAINLY sell convenience, but not only - said themselves.
Besides for ME, f.e. cosmetics are almost as important as f.e. weapons.
I do work full time. I don't race with anyone in a game though. Besides if game is too grindy it is game fault, does not have to give xp pots.
If you work 6-7 days a week for 12 hours a day. Well though luck. I remember I had to work like that in past as well.
I just don't want to have cash shops in game(more specificaly on server I play - don't care what is on other servers) I personally play and I don't see anything wrong with that.
You have your own opinion and requirements for a game and I have my own.
