Leaderboard: Free Realms' vs. Wizard101's unicorns

In honor of the recently revived MMO Family column here on Massively, I thought that this week we'd extend the brutal beatings, clobberings, and verbal beratings to family-friendly MMOs. In many ways, Free Realms and Wizard101 are almost like siblings with so many things in common, and this extends to the use of sickeningly cute unicorn pets.

While I personally stopped paying attention to unicorns when Trapper Keepers went out of style, apparently they're still a "thing," especially with the younger market. You young 'uns, always keeping the unicorn union in business! Why don't you just let us harvest them for their magical horns which can be ground up and sprinkled on our Starbucks lattes?

Ahem. Sorry. In any event, one such instance of ultra-cuteness is enough; two is completely unnecessary and unhealthy for the well-being of our universe. So today you must decide which game's unicorns will rule as lord supreme over the hearts of tweens everywhere, and which will be sold to the salt mines to haul loads while crying rainbow tears. Vote! The Free Realms is the one you want to punch and I can agree.

I must say that I was never a big fan of unicorns, being, well, a dude. However, I'm in the process of reading The Obsidian Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory and the unicorns in those books have totally changed my perspective. They're totally awesome and those horns on their heads- well they aren't just for show.

One on the left is too beautiful in a "Last Unicorn" sorta way, but with even Bigger eyes. The one on the right can be colored to your taste, but looks like it wears pants.

One thing is certain : I vote for Unicorns you can mount to the wall and Narwhals you can ride!

Now, get me a Mechanical Horse or a Dragon and now we are talking! ;)

I prefer Glen Cook's unicorns from the Garrett, PI series, all carnivorous pack-hunting evil bastards (with wardogs!).

But given the choice at hand I went with the ones that were not wearing creepy pants. Looks like cutie mark Skidz. Eeyuk.

I vote for Twilight Sparkle.

I wouldn't argue with that, but Fluttershy isn't a unicorn. I might give a bye for Celestia or Luna, since they have horns, but...

Um. I'm having an embarrassing nerd moment, aren't I?

Clearly......the use of eyshadow in regards to the unicorn on the right is both tasteful and flattering in the make believe light that it is pretend standing in.

As for the unicorn on the left, is that your left or my left? Anyway the one with the green foppery around its chest, shows no use of the term accentuate. Another detractor for the left unicorn is the lack of hooves and polish on those hooves, this is totally irresponsible.

The unicorn the right clearly took the time to paint its own hooves to match all the hearts pasted onto its ass, this is attention to detail.

I vote for the short squat speckled metrosexual unicorn.

It's a horse with a built-in lance that doubles as a med kit. If James Bond stepped through a time warp, he'd want one. Even if it had hearts on its ass.

i think unicorns in myth are magnificent creatures the wizard101 unicorn is better at representing that

For one moment I thought these screenshots were leaked and showing the second next WoW playable race (after the Pandaren one).
On topic, I choose the right one, he looks thuggish and must have developped his intelligence/fighting abilities to compensate his tiny... horn and he boasts a darwinian adapted camouflaged ass to melt perfectly in his rosy cheesy environment, I can see him as a rogue puncturing superficially repeatedly his victims like an army of furious wasps and letting them bleed to death.
The left one is more like a girl on a catwalk, she thinks everyone should bow to her magnificence and revolve around her exceptional gravity. She's just posing and wouldn't take any action endangering her perfect haircut, necklace and makeup, soiling her snowhite skin. Her glazed eye proves that such folks earn lot of money and can afford drug so she musn't be the most effective in raids. On the other hand her horn is majestic and could be deadly, but if she can't/won't use it, her potential goes saddly to waste.

Free Realm got my vote for having a unicorn with hearts on it. LOL.

The best unicorns I've seen are Guild Wars's kirin.

For some reason people picture unicorns as white ponies with narwhal horns.

They are not. They are creatures more related to dragons than horses, with both scales and hair. They have split hooves and "goatees" like goats, manes that look like a mix between lion mane and long horse manes and long hairy tails, they also scales like dragons, their color is usually greenish or grayish, and their horns look more like rhinoceros horns, pointing backwards instead forward, and single instead two like rhinos.

But, well, people will see what they want to see.

Oh, well...
