Forget consoles and PCs -- mobile gaming is prepped to be the number one gaming platform for the next decade, according to Glitch developer Tiny Speck. Vice President of Product and Operations Kakul Srivastava says we're already seeing it everywhere: "It is what is happening right now. I think the killer console is going to be your mobile device. That is absolutely where people will play more rich and involving, and even graphically intensive games."
With the newest editions of smartphones outpacing their predecessors and coming out much faster than the next console generation, Srivastava thinks it's not surprising that mobile gaming has momentum in the industry. "That pace of change is why mobile devices are going to be the console of the future. The way player interaction and player needs are changing, it's much faster than the five to seven years [of console development] that we're talking about," she said.
She points to BioWare's comments that the studio would be looking into mobile versions of its established franchises as an example of this shift.

I enjoy games that can hold my attention for more than 5 minutes.

Depends what you mean by dominating. Mobile isn't a single platform either, it is comprised of several different OS and many different hardware systems.
I can imagine the mobile market being bigger than any single console market, analysts already predict that happening within the next couple of years. But it won't eclipse the combined console market.
Not mention analysts are moving away from platform definitions for their projections, now it is more about the type of game being produced, rather than the device that it lives on. From traditional boxed products (COD), through casual mobile games (Angry Birds) and online only products (WoW).

Gaming in front of your TV or computer is totally different compared to using a smartphone/mobile platform. I don't get it why the two has to be clumped together. I do both but I do it for different reasons.

Again, it is all fine until someone trips on their context, then someone gets hurt! ;P
I am not saying she doesn't intentionally know what she is talking about; the mobile gaming platform is shooting up, but let's step back and see this with new eyes.
Mobile gaming is still relatively new; of *course* it is shooting up in popularity. Will it replaces consoles and PCs? Not really. The types of games that work best for smartphones will either be so new/innovative/different that they will be different from traditional games or they will be small, light, casual affairs. Something you can take a few minutes to play and log off/on fast.
Of course, Tablet gaming is a bit of another matter IMO, but it's essentially a very simple version of a console ATM. With more hardware advances and possible Cloud usage, it should take of, however, I tend to think this will be in conjunction with other games (basically, you will see games being made for consoles, tablets, PC). Smartphones aren't the threat for Mobile gaming as are Tablets, IMO. I can see more people using an all-purpose Tablet in the future similar to what they use their Mobile Phones now to replace land-lines; it will be an all-in-one device that can do many things.
But, their will still be many folks that like/need specialization, plus you still have exclusivity rights, so consoles/PCs won't die so fast.
TD:LR : Basically, Mobile gaming is a new medium that complements consoles/PC gaming and while we will see a spike, since it is new, it will level off at some point. It *may* surpass other media, but the rough estimate is 8-10 years and even then, consoles/PCs will still have a fairly large share of the market still.

Yeah. Mobile is segmented. Diffrent OS, diffrent types of devices. (Mobile phones, Smartphones, Small hand-held consoles, Tablets, Small notebooks?)
Besides well I don't see apeal to be honest.
I've tried to play on diffrent mobile devices, but ultimatelly it does not really suit my tastes to be honest.
FIrst thing - display is not big enough.
Second thing - playing in buses, trains, etc is not really comfotable.
I prefer medium or big display (like absolute minimum is 15'), peace quitet and comfort.
When I am travelling or wait outside for something / someone (just ypes of situations I see myself playig something on mobile devices) I prefer to read newspaper or book, or eventually watch some movie on my laptop.
Just not my thing.

Laptops outsell desktops now, and think of how many of us sport a "smart phone" (just a small computer.)
It's not a stretch at all to say that mobile gaming will dominate, simply because it probably is already. Ask PopCap and others about how many players they have. Now, as far as mobile MMOs goes....well, I think that it is pretty darn near dominating there as well. Look at the numbers of players for Runescape, Club Penguin, Free Realms and the fact that Bigpoint and other browser companies can often have 100s of *thousands* of players in a week or less.
I was at GDCO a week ago and I sat down with one of the developers behind a series of popular browser-based RTSeseeeses. (Sorry, editor?) I looked at his site on my phone while we chatted: 105,000 players on their site playing their games.
This does not mean that these games cannot be played on your gaming desktop, it just means that more people are playing on laptops/mobile devices than ever. From everything I have seen, the numbers for mobile blow away most "standard" client based MMOs.

While I agree, I still feel there is a cap for this, from people on-the-go to those who use a device to play at home. Of course it is growing, most folks have a smart-phone/other-mobile-device. People have traditionally loaded up games on those devices and report on surveys they use it mainly for business/accounting (which, they don't. ;P ).
I think being a device one may "need" for work and other things (multi/all-in-one) it will rise in popularity, especially among non-gamers, but while there have been some good games (and apps connected to MMOs), it is still untapped.
Also, I feel one of the big deterrents is screen size (remember, we all want a big 81 inch TV). Watching movies on the go is nice, but at home? I think it'll be fine (sneaking in a movie while being sent to your room), but many prefer bigger screen. So, I think tablets will dominate...
...unless someone can figure out the "3D Light projected" structures that could display to whatever size in front of you (Mass Effect characters use this in the game). Something you can touch and manipulate the light. (Playing with a virtual dollhouse in front of you made of light, MMOs will be more about "playing with Action Figures/Dolls" than it is already!) I think once that technology is achieved, then you would see console and PC sales drop very fast, although that doesn't take into account exclusivity and if hardware will still be separated (like playing the exact same game on your Mobile device, TV, and other Sony product).

How Incredibly myopic... Then again I guess they feel like they have to ride every trend to be successful.
I suppose it helps me in the end. I'll be forced to save money if no one is making games that I want to play.

This trend must be stopped immediately, or my productivity--already scraping the bottom of the barrel, here--will plummet. D:

I am getting tired of these developers praising their particular platform or genre and saying it's the best thing since sliced bread. So much mutual back patting is disgusting in it's self congratulatory manner. It's narcissistic ego at it's worst and does NOTHING to entice us to play their games. Just shut up, make a good game and let it speak for itself.

In other news, Willy Wonka says the future will be made of chocolate.
I agree to a point, however the days of mobile games being simple little time wasting junk is numbered. OnLive means there is hope and a market for high end PC games. The delivery will be streamed and you'll be able to play them on everything, which makes them mobile, but the wave of tiny junk we see today aren't the mobile games that will dominate. It's only a matter of time (and bandwidth) before Steam, Origin and everyone else will start streaming everything in your library.

I'd actually like to see more mobile convergence with traditional MMOs. Different ways to access the game and keep in touch. Similar to what Fallen Earth did.

I've been playing Glitch for the past couple weeks, and I'm hooked. Good game design is good game design, no matter the format.
And the thing with browser/mobile games is their crossover appeal. Glitch is my bajillionth mmo, and my wife's first. She'd never think of playing Rift or Eve with me, but Glitch fits her Facebook sensibilities to a T, while at the same time appealing to my love of a good sandbox. Brilliant.
