As much as I've been supporting FFXIV, I don't think it is a game worth paying a Subscription for. The wiser move on Square's part would be to make it F2P and get revenue from a cash shop. I think making people pay for a half finished game isn't a good idea, plus the massive amount of MMOs coming down the pike will only divert users. I know a company has to make a money to keep a service going, but I honestly wonder if there is enough people interested to keep FFXIV running. At this point I'd rather play FFXI than FFXIV and I think that is saying much.

What's your impression of playing a game that you know is radically gonna change?? Whats your thoughts on it being a waste to play until 2.0 or do you think the core game won't change that much??

As a very new player to the game my take on your question would be: Are the people who are playing now playing because it is free or because it is fun? Bit of both?

Yoshida's verified that they're never going to do character wipes, and that things like the core battle system, crafting, jobs & ect. aren't going anywhere. So it's more like the people who are/have been playing got a free year head start.

thought Eliot will be more excited about 2.0 but a realistic hope doesn't hurt either :P
anyway if 1.20 is anywhere as good as 1.19 i will seriously consider subbing.

PS: hopped we knew about yoshi-p interview beforehand so we can submit few questions , but its all good the guy had like 8 interviews in the last week so most questions got covered.

Went back after 1.19 hit and have been playing pretty much non stop since. Game is vastly improved, lots of quests to do, airships make travelling much easier between citys, materia crafting, leve limits being increased and cool down being lowered, dungeons and chocobos! So many changes it's quite hard to fathom.

Game will never be one for the masses but if your after something that's it's own game then FFXIV is well worth another look

Pretty strange they're charging before 2.0 comes out.

They're charging for a couple reasons: one, they've almost got the game to a point where they feel they can ask people to make a decision whether or not it's worth paying for in good faith; two, 1.20 marks the start of the content that won't be available any more in the future. They're going to be doing a free trial of 2.0 when it comes out, but essentially as of the next year or so people are going to be paying a fee for content exclusive to that time period, which, depending on what it turns out to be, is pretty fair. They've gone without charging for a very long time, and they're putting a -huge- amount of resources into this, so they do need to start gaining some revenue on it.

@Irem - I understand they need to make money. SE isn't doing well financially too. But they've openly stated they're charging before the game is ready (version 2.0) So why would anyone pay a monthly fee to play something that won't be ready?

The developers just a few months ago stated they weren't going to charge before it was ready. I guess that all changed when the CEO stepped in. It's really stupid to charge for an MMO before the developers say it's ready. Great way to kill an MMO on life support.

Yoshida believes that the game will be ready to charge for at 1.20. He's been very clear about how much he stands behind it, and it has nothing to do with Wada pushing the team, I can almost guarantee it. When they originally decided to not charge sub fees, they said that they wouldn't start charging until they had a definite plan for the game going forward, and that's what they have now in 2.0.

This isn't a cash grab, as 1.20 is where they have to put their money where their mouth is. There will be people who fall away because they aren't willing to pay, period, but the changes made in 1.19 and 1.20 have to be good enough to convince those who intended to pay a sub fee when they bought the game to stick around. 2.0 is still quite a ways off, and the dev team sounds like they're ready to be challenged to give players their money's worth in the meantime. I can't be the only person who is happy with the direction the game is going and willing to sub to experience the transitional content...and even if I were, that's still $15 that they're not making off the game now. :P People who don't want to pay until 2.0 can wait until it goes live and try the free time then.

@Irem - "This isn't a cash grab" - Sure it's not. That's why they are charging before 1.2 even comes out.

1.2 is where Yoshida feels that they'll have content and playability that's worth charging money for. He seems pretty confident that people will be happy enough with the game going forward to want to come and play it.

They did the right thing by offering the amount of free play they did, and they did it for a long, long time. If you don't think it's worth paying for at this point, don't pay for it; there'll be another free trial when 2.0 comes out. But this is kind of the point at which people either need to decide that it's worth a sub fee, or it's not worth playing at all, and if enough people are going to decide that it's not worth playing at all after the work they've put into it, well, better to know now. They really don't have a good idea of how much of their current playerbase is just sticking around because it's free until they start charging.

FFXIV will continue with development regardless of subs. If you want to play you pay.

FFXIV by all means is a complete game thats in middle of an overhaul. It's not 50% of a game. before the launch of 1.19 Yoshi said they are at the 50% mark of the overhauls. 1.20 is bringing even more additions and changes to bring that total even closer to a 100% renovated game. take it for what you will.

The biggest complaint is coming from players who have been enjoying the free ride, and are upset it about to come to an end. If you don't like the game no reason to complain about paying for it.

Yeah, seriously, if people are having fun and want to keep playing, that's kind of an indication that they've got it at a good place to start charging.

To each their own, but this game is not worth the price of a subscription yet as far as I'm concerned. The keyword in all interviews from Square now is change--they should make them before they start subs.

Even in Square's most recent apologies for the mess this game is, the big push seems to be version 2.0--that is when the game will really start. They are basically going to destroy everything but our characters when 2.0 starts, right?

Yeah, I know some will want to be around to watch the old world die before 2.0 drops--it's not worth it to me and paying for this unfinished game gives Square the wrong impression. Square screwed up--big time.

And they know 2.0 is the game FFXIV should have been and will continue to hype it everytime a press release or interview is made from now on.

No. They're redoing the UI, adding new features, optimizing the graphics, and revamping the outdoor environments. The core of the game mechanics are already in place.

Some of the stuff they're adding now is just to bring the game up to a comfortable state and will be thrown out for new stuff when 2.0 hits. However, a lot of it--the Primals, for instance--are going to be part of the new game as well.

Anyone heard about expansions? Technically that is what 2.0 will be. Have you seen all the changes they will do to WoW once that new expansion launches next year/2013? So how is this game any different? And do any of those complaining realizable that it takes cold hard cash to get this work done. You milked the Cow for free long enough its time to pay the piper.

I am hopeful that they will continue to better the product and that 2.0 is a success. And yes I will sub for this game, is the game sub worthy? Almost, but if they keep up with this it will be in a few months, so I am willing to pay and play.
