It would be wonderful if this game was actually playable instead of being a super secret club only random lurkers of random forums get to play.

@Destati There are many people in the beta but it will be quite long, they are aiming for early 2012 for OB.

Yeah, a closed beta that doesnt get keys thrown around like candy!
What a novel concept.

The pic reminded me of some of the old Bioware games.

Hard to see mobs and gloomy visuals are also not my cup of tea. But the Wild West of skill trees and use of skill gems just fascinates me. And even if it comes out at the same time or close to Diablo 3, a free to play game as interesting as this one deserves a look or two. D3, for all its Blizzard-y issues, also looks wildly wicked and interesting. What to do, what to do!

To Sum Up: Path of Exile is Diablo 3 that everyone deserved to get and should have gotten.

@UnknownVoice

That could quite possibly be THE phrase of the year, however, I've played neither game yet.

Once I do, and if the outcome mirrors your quote, I'll be saying that to every goddamn person I see.

@UnknownVoice I'm sure I just missed your point, so can you clarify? Having played the D3 beta more obsessively than is healthy, I have to say that it's the best entry in the franchise by a large margin (with an admittedly tiny sample size). Then again, customization is kinda a big deal to me, which would explain why I like it.

Or do you just mean that the closed beta is showing off a lot more than the D3 beta did, or something? Sorry, my english is a touch rusty these days.

@Faction 3
D3 plays like generic rpg game with world-of-warcraft-ish lore and almost nothing that made Diablo franchise the way it was.(Seriously? Focus on crafting? NO skill or statpoints? Locked skill progression? role-based co op?)

PoE plays like a graphically improved Diablo 2 with materia system added and unlimited cross-classing capabilities, innovative skill system that allows you to basically design your own spells, groundbreaking currency system(there is no currency, only bartering), three or four different game modes, as well as ability to support persistent pvp servers.

To make it clear. "D3" streamlines and goes towards more generic/traditional fantasy rpg game style. PoE builds upon and expands what made D2 so good, fixing quite a few bad things about it..

eeeesh...I'll still be giving D3 a try, but with more reluctance than usual....

Thank god PoE is free...otherwise, I'd probably be strolling up to the Best Buy counter with PoE come release.

True that this game may end up competing against Diablo 3, but I doubt it will matter. Diablo 3 has had more than its fair share of flack thrown its way (not all of it undeserved if you ask me), and that could cost D3 a little.

Between D3, Path of Exile, and Torchlight 2 (which I think is coming out soonish, not sure), D3 is the one that actually has to kind of prove itself and not the other two.

@BGExorcist I'm from Northern Ireland and the trailer sounded more Scottish to me. Then again, we have a ridiculous number of different accents here, so it could be voiced by an Irishman.

Looks cool. I'll be sure to check it out once it releases. I like the sound of the skill gem system, being able to combo and link the gems for different effects.

Oh, and what the hell does the Duelist class do? Is it like a Rogue? Still cant figure that out.

@Faction 3

The Duelist is a Dex/Str class. Right now, everybody starts in the center of the skill tree, which allows for quite a bit of customization, but you lack class definition. In the next patch they are moving each class to a different starting location in the passive skill tree, as well as reworking quite a bit of the tree. This should help define the different classes quite a bit more.

Overall, I am quite impressed with the game. I have not had a single crash, and the base gameplay is very solid. The skills that are in the game are fun, and they get even more interesting once you start linking support gems to them. All of the core mechanics appear to be in, but they are still refining nearly every area of the game.

What will separate this game from the others is the skill gem system coupled with the support gems, allowing for a huge variety of abilities and ability customization.

Does the level up system in this remind anyone else of Final Fantasy X's Sphere Grid?

Don't worry about the color and contrast. I made a post on their beta forums a while back that caused a lot of discussion. They have changed the contrast a good bit in the update that is currently on the alpha servers. Should help.
