Free Diablo 3? Why do I get the feeling there's something funny going on with this?

@Lucidus

A passenger arline flight costs the airline the same whether there's 1 person riding or 100. Since WoW population is currently dropping, they might as well make some sort of promotion to garner more players since the capacity is there.

Furthermore, if people pay the 12 month fee and then don't play any WoW and only play Diablo3, then it makes no difference as to whether they paid for WoW subscription or D3 box. Fundamentally it's the same as SOE's all access pass. People only have so much time to play. It doesn't really matter how much of your software they "have". Only thing that matters is they're paying you money to play something you're making.

You can believe that 1-1.5 years after D3 release they're going to have: pay 12 month subscription to WoW and get D3X free.

@Lucidus

peope interested in playing D3 will get D3, since the year WoW sub will be more expensive than D3 alone.

people interested in WoW will be getting a freebie, but they would have still paid for the WoW sub without it, so its a quite strange move.

and anyway with Torchlight and Path of Exile about to drop, I think many people will choose neither.

Plus SWToR around the corner
plus GW2 looming on the horizon

guess its not gonna be a good year for Blizzard....

@Lucidus It's marketing. There's a cash squeeze going on worldwide, in case nobody's noticed.

Ethereals I might have stayed for. Some substantial structure that I could build and develop and participate in would have been nice. Adding pandas and their own mini-pet mini-game does not interest me.

Blizzard is getting desperate. First time I heard of them ever pushing 12 month subs on people like this :)

@Verus It's not so much as pushing as in giving an option. I've played for 6yrs and I do the yearly subs each time. So for me it's a bonus on something I already do. I do believe they are also gonna let you do monthly but have to agree to some deal where you will do 12 consecutive months of payments for WoW. They could track it too since it would be linked to your battlenet ID.

@Alex Oglitchkin They are pushing the 12 month sub because they will gain a lot of profit. People will get the sub because they see "FREE GAME".

@Grumms Can't blame them for offering it. They aren't forcing it.

I don't think you know what "desperate" means. Yes its a lot of incentives, but however you chose to look at it, you're either getting a new triple-A game, or a greatly reduced wow sub.

Its a great move, its a great deal, and will put pressure on EA/bioware. Think they'll give away ME3 for free? Even then, D3 is probably better/offers more replayability.

You're right. It really is a strong move. If the bribe were enough to lure me back (and I have to say, I'm close), not only would they get the twelve months of payments (or one big payment for a year of gaming), I'd also have to buy Cataclysm...That's a really good deal for Blizzard. All they're losing is the few dollars of revenue that they make off of a retail edition game.

Surprisingly, to take advantage of the Diablo 3 offer, you don't have to pay for a year at once. You can do it on a monthly basis. If you don't fulfill your commitment Diablo will come to your home and collect. Either that or the game will die. It needs a Battlenet connection to function.

Interestingly, you don't even have to sign up for a 12-month sub.

The agreement just means you can't cancel your subscription for 12 months. You have to have a recurring sub but can also use game cards (although you can't pay with Paypal or PaymentOne PhoneBill).

I think it definitely shows that WoW is concerned about the subscription rates, though. It really seems like a move to keep all of the people who normally would drop their subscription in between content patches.

@scottsummer this... Sure the pandas look cute, but there wasnt anything in that trailer that made me go "aw yeah!" like with the last three xpacs.

doubt I will resub for this unless a major bombshell is dropped later.

In my opinion, they want people to jump to a 12 month sub. They get A LOT more money that way.
