"The company is not releasing information as to how many of those 20 million are still actively playing the game."

They don't need to, the number that have tried the game is in itself a testament to its success.

As for its commercial success, well that depends not on how many have played the game but rather on how many have paid something to SOE when playing the game.

I bet they're not releasing that information either!

In before "20 million registered but how many still play?"

Congrats to being the Farmville of the MMO world Sony haha

No in all seriousness, popular is not always "good" as good is subjective, but popular is still a good thing so congrats to Sony and Smedley.

Wait, they hit 20 million, 17 million were PS3 player, which leaves 3 million. Only they announced hitting 8 and then 12 million before the PS3 version launched.

Can we get a numbers check on aisle 5 please? These just don't add up.

Oh, reading comprehension error there Mister Olivetti. The original article said that SOE had 17 million users when the PS3 version came out, not that 17 million PS3 users signed up.

So only 3 million players have signed up since the PS3 version launched, some percentage of which are PS3 users.

Registration numbers mean absolutely nothing. In fact they could mean bad things.

If you have 20 million people using up bandwidth and resoruces and only 1 million of them ever pay anything, that's not good for you.

Release sales data or release nothing at all. It is all that matters as far as how a game and company are doing.

Sometimes I think SOE puts this stuff out just so the lunatic fringe nutjobs will go into their anti SOE spasms

No need. These companies rarely do. All we know for sure is it's not 20 million for sure.

@Protheus
If Blizzard released info about how many players have played WoW at one point in time, It wouldnt surprise me AT ALL that the number was well over 50m....

and if you included trials, that number could skyrocket to something totally retarded...

@Fabius Bile i think 50 mill is a lowball guess ..by a lot. It's been out for what - 8 years now or something? 10 mil a year probably isn't a stretch. I would guess 100mil+

It got ME for a bit. Fun until they changed the leveling F2P features. I actually subscribed for a bit.

My household represents at least 6 of those registered users, including one PS3 user.
