So when challenged to do a story on archetypes you would choose the one you found most obviously broken in its survivability and damage output? Isn't that just reinforcing the issue that not all archetypes are created equal?

Um, Mind isn't broken. Quite the contrary. Mind is how archetypes are SUPPOSED to work. No archetype is designed to be a one trick pony that can only do ONE thing well and suck at everything else. The problem is, Cryptic's devs don't know their own game well enough to know which powers blow and which powers rock in each set. That's why the archetype descriptions differ so widely from actual ingame performance.

CO's archetypes are supposed to provide that all-important "accessibility" by being versatile enough to perform at least decently in both solo and group environments. That's not the case for most of them. Patrick doesn't need to reinforce that issue. Anyone who has played the game longer than 15 minutes could tell you that.

I'm pretty sure Patrick has said multiple times that he feels the archetypes are not equal, even in this article. Some of them have things that they are good at, but a lot of them are just plain mediocre at best, or downright terrible (like The Specialist) at worst.

The problem with the underperforming archetypes is that there isn't much to do in examining them except point out their failings. I'd much rather see good archetypes, what they're capable of, and how they can be used to maximum effect.

Quick clarification: Mind deals far less DPS than any other archetype, save for Inventor and maybe Specialist. Its DPS is sufficient, but not amazing. It is the most survivable, though, vastly out-tanking the tanks if played well. One could argue that this is because CO's system is "broken" but it's more that heals are so important that characters without them suffer. It's not like it's hard to take a heal as a freeform, so I don't see what the huge hangup is for ATs.

Thanks for this! I just closed Champions thinking, "Dang, Can't find a suitable archetype to me :\" then I saw this and I had never tested The Mind and it looks nice, including the fact that it has a pet in a higher level, and I as a pet lover and a C-Pointless couldn't recuse this opportunity.
But hey, would you spare your Handle so we can maybe coop one day?

My global is @Auspicious. It's on the Massively guilds page.

I don't log in a whole lot for actual gameplay unless there's a gameplay patch or something I need to test, or if I'm livestreaming or roleplaying. Next week is on healer passives, for instance, and I need to test some specifics for AoPM's heal bonus and stuff. I have done pretty much everything there is to do in the game, so I kind of idle a bit when we're lacking in new content.

If you'd like to play with me, shoot me an email, patrick@massively.com :)

OH I almost forgot. Don't get the pet for Mind. Ego Storm is so much better. The Nightmare is decent if you're a telepathy freeform but you have to make the choice between Nightmare and Ego Storm. Ego Storm is one of the best powers in the game and should never ever be skipped.

Wow! I wanted to play the mind, but the description in the game made me thing it wasn't such a good choice. Maybe I'll give it a second look.

The in-game descriptions for most of the archetypes are at odds with reality. The Mind sounds like a horrifically boring pure healer class with terrible solo abilities. I'm not going to lie - I played CO off and on before and after the F2P changeover and the description and a quick perusal of the skill progression made me never want to touch it.

Turns out, it's easily the best archetype out there.

Along with the Grimoire, the two most boring-sounding (to me, at least) archetypes are some of the strongest in solo AND group play while the ones they make sound amazing (like the Specialist) are lackluster at best.

Well, Mind is a bit sluggish at first. It's not the highest DPS character by a longshot, but Ego Sprites does the job alright. It's not watching grass grow, but it can be kind of boring because it's sort of passive watching dots tick down. You can be more active with ego blast, but it really doesn't do much. I think the T0 blasts need a major overhaul.

I started out with a Mind when I was first poking around, but when I decided to subscribe and got the ability to do a freeform character, I found that the Celestial powers were totally the way to go for a healer/dpser. Tons of DPS and tons of healing, as well as resurrection that can be traited into a group rez. Good times!

Celestial has advantages and disadvantages. I admit that a rez is nice in lairs. The Celestial heals are very energy-intensive, so some optimization is needed for best results.

By comparison, Empathic Healing is very low cost so it can be used very frequently, and Vala's light has the nice regen buff advantage and is AoE. Along with Celestial Conduit, I'd say those are the top 3 heals.

Got lvl 34 mind lvl 40 glaciar and lvl 37 void working a blade now to with the free character slot give away they had for a more pure dps.
The mind is very nice just throw the storm and spirit and wait wile you heal yourself but so far atleast my mind got so low health 1 good hit kills me. (3k vs the 11k and 7k on my 2 othere in health)
My preferd archtype so far got to be the glaciar high dps and strong tank that allmost nothing able to bring down exept the cosmic guys.
For pvp tho no clue what is nicer dont do it much.

Man, this sort of made me want to play CO again, I found it kind of fun in beta but never went back after F2P.
Also, Reisen is my favourite too.

My favorite Touhou character is Remilia, but Reisen is a mentalist so... I thought the references were appropriate. I main Suika/Remi in Hisoutensoku, but I love Remi the most :D
