Smart move. Say what you will about World of Warcraft but this will increase their numbers by at /least/ 2-3 million.

"Asia is one of WoW's biggest markets, with countries like China producing massive amounts of players who are into the game."

Hahaha! "Producing." I just envision some assembly line somewhere deep under Shenzhen: Chinese babies are produced, get branded Horde or Alliance, and are then dumped into WoW incubators to boost subscription numbers.

So while that's a poorly worded sentence, it's certainly amusing as hell. :)

@Rafe that would explain the quality of players in the LFD queue.

*zing!*

Very smart.

While other Western companies are fighting over scraps, Blizzard is picking up customers they can't even touch.

Still don't know why people say it's dying. It's like some internet sport, but this is the best run company overall by far. All these alsorans are trying to copy them but they keep trailblazing.

I think it's going to be interesting when Trion tries their "asia move" with Rift and they expect it to be a hit. I see fans saying that all the time "just wait til we open up in Asia buddy!" We've seen that with Warhammer in Asia and every other Western game that goes there to die.

They show vision and have the money to back it up. And before any haters come in.. no, I do NOT play WoW anymore and havent' for two years.

I'm not going back either.

@real65rcncom

Im curious why you think this will work for WoW and not Rift (which iirc you have said is virtually the same game, but I could be mistaking you for someone else).

@fallwind

yeah, I think you have me confused with someone else. Too many other games have gone overseas and died.

Asians love WoW. It's a very big brand name to them and other games that try to follow them overseas don't do well. If they can play WoW or a game with many features like WoW, they probably would stick with the original that they've known and heard about.

Doesnt make sense for them to play a game like Rift when everyone else in their world is playing WoW.

@real65rcncom WoW isn't dying, but there's no denying of the fact that WoW is losing subs rapidly in the west, and that's even before big AAA MMORPG's like GW2 and SWTOR and a host of other ones have hit the scene.

WoW may expand in some Asian countries, but in the west it's a different story already and more so when those other MMO's arrive.
Not hating or such silly thing, just stating the obvious.

I think were in agreement. There is a decline in Western subs for WoW. That said, there is a decline in western subs for all games atm. The mmos out now simply aren't getting the job done for most people to pay subs for the most part.

This is why WoW's move was smart. Western subs drop, raise Asian subs.

Not only that, they have that whole market to themselves alone with no other Western game able to follow them. That makes Blizzard far ahead of everyone else regardless of whether people think WoW sucks or not. They are making the most money and in this game the most money wins, not most subs.

@real65rcncom

except wow doesn't have "subs" in asia and only makes 6% of its operating profits there. the substantial loss of western subscribers is a far bigger deal than you realise.

and as for having the "whole market to themselves" that's just nonsense. utter nonsense.

WoW is placed 4th-5th as an MMO in China and there's a huge drop off behind the leaders. its basically a niche product and sits well behind behind indigenous competitors many, many times its size in terms of player numbers.

oh and PS the Japanese are insane for Star Wars btw.....

@(Unverified) I think you are hung up on what they are "called" as in "subs", subscribers or whatever which isn't that important.

What is actually important is that whatever you are calling them or considering them as, only Blizzard has them in great numbers. No other Western game even comes close.

So even if it's a foozlewadder that pays $1 a month equivalent, that's still several MILLION dollars a month no other company is getting Western side, nor will ever be able to touch.

Think about this: any Western company that opens up servers in Asia isn't going to be able to go in there and charge $15/month either. So even if Rift or someone else did that, they'd only be getting $1 too (probably less to try and compete).

So your claim is ridiculous that don't beat the crap out of other Western companies.

Very smart of them indeed but doesn't that say something to you? They have to go to other parts of the world to bolster their numbers that are falling off in other parts?

Also, China is one of their biggest player base? Hello gold farmers anyone? Of course it is. China also has the biggest population in the world with India trailing right behind them.

Also Korea is their biggest SC 1 and 2 base as well. With the added numbers they'll keep doing well for more years to come. Don't think that area of the world will get anything as big unless TERA knocks them off.

@(Unverified) People don't pay for SC and SC2, last time I remember. Besides, last time I checked the Korean charts it was Aion that was the top MMORPG played in Korea, not WoW.

lol Aion alone is more popular than Star Craft 1, WoW and the flop Star Craft 2 combined in Korea.

They know they will be losing alot of players when TOR and GW2 release. This is their defense.

@SaintV Their defense to combating TOR is to expand into other countries that TOR doesn't exist in? I don't get the logic of how that's a defensive stratetgy, probably due to it not being one.

Business 101 - the easiest way to grow your customers is to expand in other territories. This is not a reactionary gesture by Blizzard to recoup the already lost subscribers, as that would be a NA centered strategy, which this is clearly not.

Let's hope for their sake that TOR and GW2 isn't released in those countries as well.
