@Dunraven

I can't help but notice that "should be free to play by " keeps getting pushed back... was "summer", then "fall", then "dec 20" now "apr 2012"....

Keeps getting pushed back more often then a Howard Camping prophesy.

Never played Rift, but I would try it before returning to WoW due to a single feature: flexible classes.

I love the idea of a character being able to respec to any role, and the flexibility provided by having 5 stored specs :)

(On the other hand, both GW2 and TSW seem poised to offer even more flexibility; TSW does not even have classes, and all characters should be able to eventually learn all skills. This means I will most likely try those two before Rift.)

The biggest turnoff for me with Rift was the lack of good race choices and the factions were a severe turn off.
You could either pick bible thumpers or technology junkies (more or less).
Which is an interesting idea but the annoying thing was that players got polarized (think religious types and Atheists) who would just pick one side or the other based on their real-world views without much regard to the context of the game (ie does it really make sense to be an Atheist in a game world where Angels are floating around?).
The races were so boring... I wish there had been more options and at the very VERY least, an animal-like race of some sort to pick. It made it very hard to get any sort of interest in what my race's cause was or motivation for my faction.

@(Unverified) I'm guessing you couldn't get interested in your cause because you weren't paying attention. No, the Defiants aren't atheists, and yes, they can't be specifically because there ARE "angels floating around."

@(Unverified) I too wish there had been more races. Humans, humans, elves, elves and dwarves....

Still not seeing anything compelling to make me want to jump in as a new subscriber. I have no problem paying for game content, but honestly there isn't enough here to get me excited about playing. I have plenty of fun in a few f2p / freemium MMOs. Those should hold me over while waiting for GW2 and TSW.

If I could have played the trailer as a character, I would have never left. Unfortunately, I had a sub so won't be going back.

Game is okay but just kind of boring longterm (no replayability, few zones). That's not a knock on anyone playing and glad they are having fun. But it's just lackluster and I don't really care about this world honestly.

Also, their polish doesn't seem so polished anymore. So much more stuff is buggy and broken now requiring daily fixes/hotfixes (the recent Faces bug was hilarious when you had Easter Island heads all around) so the quality is about what other games do.

I canceled my account a couple of weeks ago, after eight months. I played for almost 170 hours, got a character to 40, and... I'm just not invested enough to keep playing. I had fun, but I'm done. I don't see anything in this trailer that changes that - it's just more of the same. Which is okay, Trion does what they do very well. I just found myself wanting something else.

For me, what killed it was lack of "roots." The world never drew me in, never made me a part of itself. You do a quest, kill a mob, close a rift, and it might be entertaining for a moment, but when it's time to turn in quests, all you really have to do is sell loot. Can I pick up the daily quests? Did I level? Can I buy any more craft recipes? No? I don't want to go back out and do more quests, so I guess I'm done for tonight.

Nothing ever seemed to change. It didn't seem to matter if I was there. I could go a week or two without logging in, and it didn't seem like it mattered. The world continued to stay the same whether or not I did anything. Intellectually, I know that's true for any MMG, but my gut kept grumbling the illusion was particularly thin in the case of Rift.

And though I always considered housing a fluff feature (I like it, but I didn't think it was an essential feature), I find that being a hobo in Rift after over a decade owning my own bits of landscape in AC1, EVE, CoV, and LotRO actually does color my feelings toward Telara. It's a place I visit, not a world I live in.

I don't know if this is my own changing tastes or a particular failing of Rift. I'm not even sure why I'm posting this rambling statement. It's a fun game and I enjoyed playing it for months. I don't understand why it never hooked me.

@Stormwaltz You played for 170 hours and only got a character up to level 40?

@Stormwaltz

Considering that you played for 8 months, that is a considerable amount of time and subscription funding that you gave them. So they did something right to keep you that long. :)

Have fun in your next MMO.

Why did they destroy this trailer with crappy purple fonts? Spending money on this and they could at least make intresting and cool fonts.

Im not going back to RIft until we see a decent raid/groupframes and better buffing and healing addons than we see now. It really kills the game atm. For me ofc

i really like everything about Rift, except...

i found the character soul system _too_ flexible for me. i wanted more rigidity. it just seem too much FotM would happen after each patch.
for some reason, this just broke my head when trying to play this game.

which is a real shame, because i literally love everything else about Rift.

I did have a couple of alts in the 20s, but it's mainly because I'm more about the experience of playing than the leveling or rewards. I do everything I can in an area. Since Rift has more quests in any given zone than is required to level, I ended up doing a lot of stuff 3-5 levels under me.

No matter how good this trailer is,I still don't want to play Rift anymore because the game is okay but lacks a true identity & soul.

I don't know if they wised up and changed this since launch, but when I tried the game during late beta (past the point of any form of content being redone) the game was essentially world of warcraft two steps ahead in terms of graphics and three steps behind in terms of gameplay. I got to level 12, and every last quest I could find was a simple rubber-stamped quest with different mobs to grind in different quantities. I had to either kill X number of Y mobs, gather X number of items off Y mobs' corpses, click on X number of items scattered around the area, or talk to someone about 500 feet away to do all of that over again with new mobs.

It was pretty, the game was smooth and generally well coded, but all that is for not if the game itself sucks. And I wouldn't put faith in the people who designed that horrid grind to produce anything good after launch when they couldn't manage only a few months ago.

@Shadowstorm

So you played in Beta untill level 12 and you are juding an MMO based on 4 hours of gameplay. Sometimes I love the comments on Massively.

If they can't come up with something interesting, unique, or engaging in the first 4 hours, why should I believe they can in the rest of them?
