How does the prospect of a player-owned customs office in EVE Online grab you? Whoa, settle down there, Mr. flying-in-space troll, as we're not talking about Incarna-style player housing here but rather a new mechanic that seeks to add a bit more sand to New Eden's sandbox.
CCP Omen has the details in the latest EVE dev blog and in a nutshell, player customs houses exist to enable planetary taxation and to add a new wrinkle to the game's planetary interaction mechanics. You'll need to erect a customs office in orbit around a planet (note: there can be only one), and of course it can be attacked and destroyed by your fellow capsuleers.
For a list of materials, costs, and associated corporation functionality, warp on over to the official EVE dev blog.

In short - sounds interesting, and perhaps this could be a more legitimate way of renting 0.0 space? Naw, who am I kidding, 0.0 alliances will extort even more money out of people with this.

I really liked the idea.... CCP is going in the right direction with ideas like these.

This is actually quite huge, and is going to shake up PI quite a bit. It will also annihilate my current PI holdings, as there is almost no way to control the space I currently do colony work in. *sigh*

Same here. If this goes into effect then it sounds like it will just further hurt the smaller corps, as the larger ones can just steamroll planet after planet.

More or less. Not only will you need to be able to take down a small POS, but you'll need to be able to hold it. Nearly impossible for a corp smaller than 15 people.

Standard Eve Vet response to a new player complaint. "If you don't like it leave" Interesting thing, People have been taking that advice to heart. The game isn't growing it's slowly declining.http://eve-offline.net/?server=tranquility Note in the Alltime Graph. A shame, Vets New players are the lifesblood of any mmo. For such an intelligent playerbase this one fact seems inconceivable.

You do realize the graph is "backwards" - new information is on the left, oldest on the right. The amount of players goes in a wavemotion, it is declining a little right now, but with the recent stuff announced by CCP - it just might start rising again.

The rammifications of this are quite big.
I'm seriously considering just going back to mission ships and buying the POS fuels I need with the missions' consistent ISK-flow that doesn't become a bigger pain in the ass with every iteration.
PI really doesn't bring in enough to really put in resources fighting for it.

True. It's been profitable for me, but that's with almost zero maintenance after having made a complete setup. Adding overhead costs from combat in my lowsec holdings will surely mean my profit margins drop to almost nothing.

Honestly with the time I put in transporting, chasing hotspots and rebalancing because of resource decay. Now I'll have to deal with shifting low sec landlords (and really, how many of them will be reasonable with the tarrifs?)
No I'm pretty sure that if this goes through as described by CCP Omen in the forum thread the combined hassle and cost will make this worthless.
At least it will simplify my gametime allocation.

As IRL, the rich will get richer, and the poor will stay poor. I guess the lesson is: join up with a larger corp, and be prepared to fight it out with your corp mates whose turn it is accessing the depleted planktic colonies.

Will players be able to craft items for this or will we have to buy the items from CCP like the vanity items?

@Lateris The Customs Office Gantry itself is a 9600 m3 compact structure that is manufactured in assembly lines in stations (for exact materials, see the Material Shopping List) and must be anchored no further than 100,000 km from the planet.
The blueprint copy for the Customs Office Gantry will be available from the CONCORD loyalty point store for 6000 LP and 20,000,000.00 ISK. Alternatively the factions in Factional Warfare are also handing out the blueprint at a 50% discount! The blueprint original for the gantry will not be released. In case you forgot which corporation to sign up with for factional warfare, here they are:
24th Imperial Crusade (Amarr)
State Protectorate (Caldari)
Federal Defense Union (Gallente)
Tribal Liberation Force (Minmatar)
You can of course just buy the Gantry on the market, provided that someone is putting it up for sale.

if the resources get contended enough, the economy of PI will change dramatically. It will mean it could be worth trying to muscle over a particular planet that you find suitable.
But more than likely, it will just get meta gamed to the point of broke some how so that its not fun to even bother with.
I'm a wormholer in EVE, and no doubt this will make wormhole space more desireable because its very easy to defend a wspace system from your typical attacks you see in null sec.

"Whoa, settle down there, Mr. flying-in-space troll"? Seriously? Did you take classes from CCP Zulu on how to write posts?
At least it wasn't a picture of a poodle on a treadmill this time, although the night is yet young. You could outdo yourself.

I'm just curious...no one has questioned how Dust 514 figures into this part... I doubt a station will just sit in space without some kind of Terran support.. speculative of course...
