While it's not quite a conspiracy unmasked, Turbine has officially acknowledged a bit of a security issue with its Lord of the Rings Online-related web applications. Last week we reported on the temporary closure of the game's official forums, and today Turbine has issued a press release that touches on the situation.
As you would expect, it's all very hush-hush in terms of details, and the release recommends password changes for all LotRO players. While the game itself remains open for business, there is no time table for the restoration of forum services. "We are continuing to investigate and the forums will not reopen until this work is complete," Turbine says.

So, by that statement I assume no accounts were compromised?

Given the actions and information so far, it does not seem they think any accounts would have been directly compromised by the issue. The password change is listed as a precaution and I don't think we'll hear much else until their investigation has progressed further.
If you do change your password, though, be sure to do it from a system you know to be secure. Logging in from a public computer or even a friend's computer to change your account info could end up causing you a problem where one did not already exist.

The link to the press release seems to link to the message about forum maintenance that has been up for a few days. Is there any news more recent than this?

Does Turbine really expect to reach "all players" through a press release? Why hasn't the company sent an email to every customer?

This might bite Turbine more than any game changes that made players mad. No forums for a week or more is one thing, but not being definitive about whether or not accounts have been compromised and taking so long to give such vague information is enough to ruin a company. If people do not trust your company they will not leaving their credit card information with you. Turbine is SOE whereas they can afford to lose any customers and hope they come back. Turbines #'s have never been astronomical by any standards.
I just hope this does not turn into some of their "outages" like how the lotteries were only supposed to be down a short time, but that turned into months.

This is also affecting the DDO forums, which uses the same software.

Well if you haven't changed your password in a month or two sounds like now is a good time to do it. Not a whole lot else we customers can do at this point.

Maybe they'll finally invest in a web-presence that isn't completely crummy.
