"on EverQuest Next, saying that he hopes the team can deliver something akin to the re-envisioning of the Star Trek franchise in the 2009 film."

@Saker So, it's going to be dumbed down and filled with lens flares? Sounds about right.

@HitechLolife the reboot was badass. ive watched star trek since the late 80s. they did do a good job, give them credit there =) the MMO sure did suck but the remake/re-envisioning was great...people bitched about it but its a re-envisioning, of course it will be different. Before the remake the last good Star Trek movie was First Contact and before that Part IV. The Star Trek films continuity were never that great. What sucks is First Contact only made 90million. The film was badass!

@Janitor Badass... no, assbad, yes! Craptastic! An abomination. Roddenberry would be spinning in his grave if there was one. Star Trek in name only.

@Saker "Star Trek in name only"? Yeah, because it was actually good the entire movie, unlike the prior ones which only yield one good thing: "Khaaaaaaaaaannnnnnn!". A handful of seconds out of hours worth of celluloid.

@Janitor Compared to the other recent(..er) Star Trek movies it was a good film. But It wasn't a good Star Trek movie in that the brainy scifi elements were dropped in order to have more mass appeal. So yeah, it brought in the bucks, and it entertained but it didn't scratch the Star Trek itch, for me at least.

To bring this back on topic -the analogy still holds. EQ1 to EQ2 was simplified a great deal for similar reasons. The latter is a fun game, but it is missing some of the essence of the original.

@Saker Well considering all the original cast that is still alive loved the movie and considering that the movie made a killing in the box office, more then twice as much as any other Trek film. I would say that almost everyone would disagree with you.

My wife and I have been Trekkies since the late seventies and we both loved the new movie. Gene Roddenberry would be quite proud of the new film imho.

I hope UO and EQ both outlive me. That would be a triumph of design over eye candy.

And here I was hoping Everquest Next would be a semi throwback to what got this genre started.

@Faith Theres no saying that it won't be. I am hoping being that he is comparing it to the newest Star Trek film which was a re imagining of the brand while also staying true to its roots. That maybe they will do the same with Everquest Next.

If they could make a new EQ with the faster more exciting combat and graphics of today's games. And add that to a huge lore filled world where every race has its own town and starting area and also meaningful factions.(in other words some areas will be dangerous to you depending on your race/alignment) We could have a big hit.

I know that SOE has been asking the EQ community a lot what they want to see in EQ Next. EQ players do not usually like the dumbing down that WoW has introduced, so this gives me hope.

Heres what we know about Everquest Next:

-It's been in development sense 2009.

-It's moreso a throwback to EQ than EQ2.

-It will more than likely be cross platform onto the PC and PS3 due to
several of smed's quotes as well as 3 job postings for SOE for Everquest 3 on the PS3 and several smed quotes.

-It will have reduced races and classes than those from EQ2 more likely, and hopefully, resembling the original set from EQ1

-it will more than likely be f2p

-Due to the leaked reel of animations I saw the graphics are truely next gen, using the Forelight engine used in "Planetside Next" however retaining a bit, I'll restate that, a bit, of the "large shoulder pads and jumping 20 feet in the air with a huge sword" animations of WoW.

-It will have a greater focus on PvP than EQ1 or EQ2

-The Agency was recently ganked and additional manpower and funding was then put into EQN and Planetside

-Smed is an unmitigated, lying, piece of shit. Most of this info was gathered from interviews, fan faires, etc from him, and therefore subject to being change or completely untrue.
