Sorry to sound like a troll, but isn't this a MMORPG news site? Is LoL considered an MMORPG now?

@ndessell Hopefully that's why they did it. Because if LoL is a MMO there are A LOT of other games they need to be covering.

This is the second time we've gotten league of legends news. Things is, massively has said they don't cover non-MMO's.. If they are low on MMO's massively really only scrapes the surface.. there are a ton more MMO's which massively never mentions, or will get one article and we'll never hear about it again.

@(Unverified) We normally cover League of Legends and other MOBAs in our weekly Not So Massively column, which is a roundup of all the week's news from those games. Recently we've decided to start covering the big news from the biggest Not So Massively games as standalone news posts.

Defining an MMO these days is difficult, arguably they still share the same database, should instanced into lots of matches like LoL, WoT, GW, SC2 etc. To me they are as much MMOs with large communities as the traditional few thousand per shard approach.

Massively - Millions of registered players, gigantic community
Multiplayer - They got it.
Online - Yep

MMOs don't mean just 3rd person running around in a dungeon killing raid bosses and doing fetch quests anymore. Look at it as just a different breed of MMO game rather than something on a different genre altogether.

@Brendan Drain

And who says LOL is "massively popular" ?

Oh right the Xfire stats.

Anyone believing LOL is being played more than COD series and WOW is ... ignoring about every other sampling program on the market. BTW.

LOL is not even found in recently made studies of internet gaming. You know studies with real scientic based samples.

See: http://www.nielsen.com/us/en/insights/top10s/video_games.html

I don't see ANY mention of LOL in that study, and that one WAS with a scientific sample btw.

@(Unverified) Did you read your own link? LoL is the most popular online game right now and continues to gain momentum by their entry in tours...It's the exception to the rule that it is covered here, it will probably be the same with D3 if they don't make another dedicated joystiq blog like WoWinsider.

While I'm not arguing against LoL news, by your definition, Call of Duty and Halo are both MMOs.

I think the widely accepted definition is a game with a persistant character in a persistant massive world. The massively part referring to the scope of game, not number of players. Of course, there are some that will bend the rules. Guild Wars, for example, with all its instanced world. You could argue that LoL summoners are persistant, but there really is no world (well, an explorable one... They tease.me with that map!)

@Braiks

In that case, Starcraft 2 fits, since you have to be connected to battle.net ;)
After all, you can play LoL against bots in a custom match by yourself.

Don't take me too seriously here, I just don't think this fits the Massively part of the MMO. The term came from the days before the games could be described as Massively popular(compared against mainstream games of the time) as the term was meant to describe the world you were "living" in.

@KvanCetre If I remember correctly, you need internet connection to install the game, you can play in offline mode after that.

Nice to see the Skarner buff. I tried him before and found he was kind of weak. Also the adjustment of Dominion points for rewarding team play sounds great.

Too bad about the nerfings of late game carries in Dominion though, I had a lot of fun with Poppy. She is a lot of fun in Dominion since her main weakness is lane farming, which isn't important in Dominion.

LOL only got the attention by putting out massive number of clients through Xfire.

It's not even a decent game.
