THQ says WAR40K release date, features list is 'pure speculation'

Mass conspiracy? Over-eager fans? Or deliberate misinformation? No matter what the case, it turns out that recent information about Warhammer 40K: Dark Millennium Online was not passed down by THQ itself, and these "facts," such as the launch date and class list, should be treated as speculative rumors and nothing more.

THQ sent a letter to several media outlets clarifying the situation:

It has come to THQ's attention that some media are reporting that we've announced game details and a release date for our upcoming massively multiplayer online project, Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium Online. At this time THQ has not officially announced a release date and any reported features are pure speculation. THQ will announce confirmed game features and an official release date at a later time.

We will keep an eye on this title and the news coming out of THQ as it develops.

It's where all the info on the story came from if you trace it back. He claims this:

"A little birdy has dropped me some more info as well".. and then posted all that info, which now has THQ scrambling to shipright.

That's why I say it' hasn't been a good PR week for them and War40K. I'm guessing THQ is thinking, with fans like this, who needs trolls?

Warseer is usually pretty good about finding early info on new miniature and army book releases, so it wouldn't really surprise me if a lot of the features on that list turn out to be true. That being said, regardless if it's true or not I can see why THQ has gone on the defensive here. Just goes to show how different the vide game media landscape is compared to other that of other hobbies (and how willing they are to report on anything that seems even remotely true like it's the word of god, sometimes).

What this is, is that THQ has doubt about even releasing the game now. Anyone read the "conflict" talk about sequel to Space Marine and the MMO? MMO is a heavy investment. home console game is a smaller investment and Space Marine is doing ok. THQ thinks that they share the same audiences and thus MMO is redundent.

You know what makes me sick thinking about a 2013 release date? Just imagine how many gPotato and Aeriola F2P reiterations there are going to be from now until then...

I don't really know what to say about any article on this game except that I'd really like it to be good.

Please, game, be good. Please. I will buy you.

Shoot, that's too bad. It would have been nice to get some solid info on the game. Plus if they were releasing that much it would certainly have meant it was farther along than I thought.

Oh well, I'm fine with them being quiet until they have things hammered out to the point where they know it works. As long as the game is good, the community will wait.

Most of what the list said was either already confirmed (darksiders engine for example) or inconsequential.

Not exactly shocking that it turned out to be fake.

@Shadowstorm I hadn't heard any word on possible classes. That would have given more insight into the game design.

I guess it's back to "Release date or GTFO!" comments for the next 2 years or so. I was hoping they where doing that to circumvent rabid fanboi impatience, but I should of known. That is, if it's not practised industry standards, it's most likely false. :(

Of course, if some outsider started leaking actual game details unannounced it would be a good idea to tell people they were "speculative at best" rather than say they were completely false.

The term "speculative" leaves room for them to be true were as claiming they are false would require a definite statement of exclusion.

While I admit getting caught up in the excitement (I even spread the info via my blog) if you ignore the way it was just lumped all into one release which is clearly unprofessional many of the points are plausible.

@FrostPaw They couldn't outright call everything a fabrication, as there were a number of things on that list that have already been confirmed or are so obvious a choice that they're almost a given.

here's to hoping the "Order vs. Disorder" grouping of races is only rumor.

I imagine it is, as THQ has never shown any of the races working together and in at least one campaign scenario the eldar duping the orcs

I really really hope that the two faction system is only rumors. They should look at Prime and Planetside 2 who are going to compete for the same type of gamers to see that 3 factions is the best choice.

@Gaugamela It's not a rumor. They've confirmed 2 factions numerous times, so go take your 3 faction fan club and find another game.

Hopefully this means the auto-targeting is a rumor. I'd also like it if the 2-faction system were a rumor, but I doubt this is the case, as having multiple factions would be much more difficult to implement.

I hope not cuz that list blew my mind. lol
I cant wait for this freakin game if its anything like what was mentioned.
