I wonder if that's an official release date or just a release window. March 31st is the end of Q1 2013. This might be more of a, "Hey this is the latest we can release and still hit the projected Q1 2013 mark."

@darthinfamous probably window.

thq is not a big studio compared to most and they have other things going on as well.

if this actually launched on time color me surprised. but at least they gave a date so..

Probably just a window since March 31st is a Sunday. Easter Sunday, at that. And given that they've announced it 18 months in advance I'm going to make a perhaps not so bold guess here and say that the launch wondoe will be adjusted several times between now and the launch of the game.

Right, it's being developed by Vigil Games, the company that made Darksiders, a very good game, and being released by THQ, a company who still values polishing and quality on game's release and has been around for quite a bit of time compared to other companies.

Furthermore, the game has been in development since 2007(first announcement) and they refused to even show a trailer until 2010 which displayed promising details about the current development.

6 years in development by a great studio like Vigil Games, with THQ's quality concern for game release can only result in a great game in my book.

I may be a bit biased, but I compare THQ to how Blizzard was in the WC3/D2/early WoW days in terms of quality.

Wow, launch date even before solid info on game systems? Well at least it'll avoid all the "LAWNCH DATE PLZ" posts. I hope this turns out good, I love WH40k stuff, can't seem to get enough.

Either way I am starting to wish more developers would do this. "It's ready when it's done" gets VERY tiresome to hear. Even if the launch date was an estimate, something is better than nothing after waiting years for a title.

@Pilgrim

actually looking at the date of this release, this mmo is going to clash squarely with:

38 studios' Copernicus mmo possibly,

definitely before Blizzard's Titan (which is NOT a good thing),

and i think a mmo from Zenimax: http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/03/16/zenimax-online-studios-builds-new-mmo-customer-support-facility/

All of those are pureblood AAA mmo titles from GREAT studios.

Technically we don't know anything about either one of those MMOs to call them great ;)

But yeah, good studios. Suppose it's as good a time as any to "claim the territory" while it's still wide open and largely unknown, and release dates are much appreciated info alongside hype, but i cant help but think the probability of meeting this launch is low, a lot can happen in a year and a half.

You misread for some reason. I did not say those mmos were great. I said the studios were great. :)

Look up the work every company I listed there has done and you'll understand what I'm talking about.

Blizzard is.. Blizzard. People may hate them but they still have some of the best devs in the business period and EVERYONE is waiting for Titan. Even haters so they can hate on it, lol.

38 Studios new game Kingdoms of Amalur is actually a prelude to their mmo as they've said. So if you're impressed by this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lhzDkaKi1w

the mmo will probably be way better.

Zenimax. Matt Firor. DAoC fame. Enough said.

I'm not talking about THQ in a negative way but they simply don't have the "dev power" to match up with any of these companies imo. I'm just saying they have a long road ahead if they have to launch near or before any of these games, that's all.

Semms like an interesting game. Will keep my eyes on it in the future but not on my radar at this moment due to it being 2 years away.

Why even bother announcing ANYTHING this far out including details that the game is being worked on? Really growing tired of the way MMO games are announced years out then constantly bumped.

It is never good to see a release date this far in advance.

What if something goes sideways in development? That's something that can easily happen over the course of 18 months. But once a date has been given for release you're now stuck. You either fix the problem as best you can and release on time despite the problem or you delay release and anger your player base.

On the other hand, what if development goes better than expected? It's not easy to release earlier than announced because marketing and publishers have all been lined up (and budgeted) around the other date. Sure, you can spend that time continuing to polish your product but there does come a point of diminishing returns.

I like release dates as much as the next guy. Yet any time I see a company give one this far out it makes me worry that the developers are either inexperienced or overconfident. Neither is a good thing.

Seems bizarre to know a game's launch date and essentially nothing else about it.

Not to mention the fact that if this turns out to be anywhere near good, this gives every competitor and their mother plenty of time to come up with a great patch...
