Mabinogi fans aren't having the best of weeks, as their MMO of choice has been down for the count since October 4th. ThisIsGame.com reported that Nexon took the free-to-play fantasy title completely offline in order to deal with unauthorized real-money trading and implement new security measures.
Players were warned of the downtime approximately one hour before it occurred, and though there's no time table for a restart, Nexon has said that it will compensate customers accordingly.
"We have found lots of RMT [resulting] from workers and auto players during the last holiday. So we are working on [an] investigation [...] and proceeding [with] broadscale system maintenance to root it out," the company said.

One of these statements is true, the other is false.
No prizes for guessing which is which.

Niether are really true. It's the way the market is trending currently...
...but when the market gets overly saturated with F2P's, riddled with these kinda problems and everyone is sick of it, markets may go back to more stable aproach of subscriptions and/or freemiums. Or like John Cleese reporting to you while wearing a string bikini, it could find something completely different to do...such as gaining oodles of success from selling MMO's soley from box sales and expansions a la Guild Wars. Just saying.

As games, I really love DFO and Mabinogi. However, over the past six months, Nexon's already questionable management of these games has gotten even worse and has been completely incompetent. As a result, I've lost hope and finally given up on them.
I've never been a Nexon hater. Nexon picks up some great titles. I've (almost) always found their cash shops to be pretty reasonable, and they're generally great at constantly having events going. That said, after all this, I honestly don't think I'll ever play a Nexon game again.

The US servers should be taken out back and shot too. Housing has been broken for nearly 2 months now, and the friends list function hasn't been working for weeks. That, and Nexon banned hundreds if not thousands for hacking, and people are still spawning meteors at event locations to prove they didn't get them all.

@Raikulxox Forgot to mention housing is the games form of trading, like an auction house. So without it the economy is screwed more than it has been. That, and they took the game down twice (one for 23 hours) trying to fix it, but came back up with the issues still there.

Mabinogi was a extremely fun game, and was host the best Guild experience I've ever had. That being said, on it's US servers RMT and botting was a huge issue. Hopefully they can get it cleaned up, have considering the general failure of everyone else to it I don't see much hope for players of the game.

@Rengar This is very sad news to me. I really liked Mabinogi when I played it a few years ago, and it's unfortunate to see it disintegrating like this.
The game has so many great mechanics and features, it's a real shame.

I feel terrible for saying it, but I can't get over the lack of WASD movement. It seems like such an essential part of gaming now.

@Seinaru Really? Recently? Hmm.
How about background music in Iria?

Also, Nexon has given everyone free premium service (basically a sub) for almost a month as compensation. There's a lot of crap happening in mab right now but at the least the compensation's good.

Well yet another article that proves , that f2p and cash shop do NOT help combat 'illegal' / unofficial RMT.
This argument was always invalid as 'unofficial' RMT by gold farmers , etc was in Asian f2p games , is in both Asian and western f2p games , and will be in both f2p , freemium and p2p games.
Even selling gold directly (or through system like Eve Plex)through item shop won't help as gold sellers are just undercutting prices (see Eve Online , there is LOTS of gold farmers even though you can legally buy plex and sell it for isk in game legally).

@smartstep To be fair, it's not like subscription games have really put any dents in RMT either.

Scary. When someone says, "gold selling are only harming the big corporations", show them this article.
I don't play the game, but I hope it gets back online soon.

Wonder if the outcry will be in this month's "rants and raves" segment...well that is if they release blabberbox 5 this month, but from what I can tell from the pattern in when they put them up it will be this month

Too bad. This was one of the F2P's I was planning to look at. I guess they're closed for renovations. /sigh

sounds par for the course for a F2P game. Nexon arent doing anything worse than the rest if F2P publishers.
F2P equals massive hacking/cheating and close to no care by the publisher since they dont have customers (paying subs) to please inmediatly.
every here and there they will do stuff like this, massive ban waves and changes to the "antihack measures" which amount to be nothing, people caufht will just make a new account and start doing it again.
then the company will go back to doing absolutly nothing for months on end till they next wave of "but here look, we DO care, see?"
you play F2P crap, deal with this
